Two people in US hospitalized with bird flu, CDC reports

Source: The Guardian

Two people, in Wyoming and Ohio, have been hospitalized with H5N1 bird flu, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a routine flu update on Friday.

The person from Wyoming is still in hospital, while the Ohio patient has been released, according to the report. Both patients experienced “respiratory and non-respiratory symptoms”, the report said, without detailing those symptoms.

“This shows that H5N1 can be very severe and we should not assume that it will always be mild,” said Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization at the University of Saskatchewan.

The news comes amid one of the worst seasonal flu outbreaks in 15 years – raising the potential for the emergence of a more dangerous virus that combines bird flu and seasonal flu in a process called reassortment.

It is very serious for cats. The county in Florida where I retired is particularly stupid. In the first couple of days it is impossible to tell without a test whether an infection is regular flu, covid19, or avian influenza. Right now human to human transmission of avian influenza is exceedingly rare. But if human to human transmission should become common, very likely the first sign that I would have that it was in my area would be sniffles for me and two dead cats before I could do anything to protect them.

https://www.cdc.gov/bird-flu/virus-transmission/avian-in-humans.html
Infected birds shed avian influenza viruses through their saliva, mucous and feces. Other animals infected with avian influenza viruses may have virus present in respiratory secretions, different organs, blood, or in other body fluids, including animal milk. Human infections with avian influenza viruses can happen when virus gets into a person's eyes, nose or mouth, or is inhaled. This can happen when virus is in the air (in droplets, small aerosol particles, or possibly dust) and deposits on the mucus membranes of the eyes or a person breathes it in, or possibly when a person touches something contaminated by viruses and then touches their mouth, eyes or nose.

The spread of bird flu viruses from one infected person to a close contact is very rare, and when it has happened, it has only spread to a few people. However, because of the possibility that bird flu viruses could change and gain the ability to spread easily between people, monitoring for human infection and person-to-person spread is extremely important for public health.

Signs and symptoms

The reported signs and symptoms of bird flu virus infections in humans have ranged from no symptoms or mild to severe.

Signs and symptoms may include:

eye redness (conjunctivitis)
mild flu-like upper respiratory symptoms
pneumonia requiring hospitalization
fever (temperature of 100ºF [37.8ºC] or greater) or feeling feverish*,
cough
sore throat
runny or stuff nose
muscle or body aches
headaches
fatigue
shortness of breath or difficulty breathing.
Less common signs and symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or seizures.

*Fever may not always be present

My read of this is it's less transmissible between humans, most likely acquired through animal or meat or surface contact with mucous membranes. Potentially moderate or severe flu like illness which can be survived but could also cause complications such as pneumonia or other problems in respiratory-afflicted people.

that potentially have it. I guess with the psychos that won't be available. I only have to get the shingrix now I think. I have done them all including boosters for all my childhood vaccines... still waiting the full time for immunity from the last one and then I am taking a week off and will get the shingrix. It has been a long few weeks, I have had 7 vaccines so far🔥

Please make sure to cook all meat thoroughly, eggs etc. and don't drink raw milk etc. if you eat those foods. Someone's poor cats died from it because he gave them raw milk.
