U.S. votes against U.N. resolution condemning Russia for Ukraine war
Source: Washington Post
The United States voted with Russia, North Korea, Belarus and 14 other Moscow-friendly countries Monday on a resolution condemning Russian aggression in Ukraine and calling for its occupied territory to be returned that passed overwhelmingly in the U.N. General Assembly on Monday.
The U.S. delegation also abstained on its own separate resolution that called simply for a negotiated end to the war after European-sponsored amendments inserting new anti-Russian language also passed the 193-member body by a wide margin.
The votes were a clear sign of opposition by major U.S. allies as well as countries throughout the Global South who were prepared to buck heavy diplomatic pressure from the Trump administration to support President Donald Trumps efforts to quickly end the war through direct negotiations with Moscow.

(5,263 posts)How could they do otherwise? They'd be ruined by trump, hounded and trolled by magats, and have a fatwa put out on them by Putin.
Besides, they totally agree it was Ukraine who started the war! arrghhh... I do hope other countries remember that it was a stolen election, and there are so many more people here who do NOT support trump and what he's doing. IOW... please help rescue us! Can we entreat at the U.N. for rescue and/or refugee status, BTW?

(777 posts)This is my biggest criticism of the media: They allow style guides to override objective reality. It undermines both literal fact and the underlying values that even a good publication stands for.
There is LESS than zero consensus in this country for supporting Russia, and largely the opposite. But one guy is a traitor, so "the US" is now on Russia's side? Bullshit. The media needs to stop making that claim. Especially media that prides itself on having pro-democracy values.

"This was their finest hour" was a speech delivered by Winston Churchill to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom on 18 June 1940. It was given just over a month after he took over as Prime Minister at the head of an all-party coalition government.
It was the third of three speeches which he gave during the period of the Battle of France.
1. The "Blood, toil, tears, and sweat" speech of 13 May, given 3 days after the start of the German offensive in the West; his first speech to Parliament as Prime Minister, reporting the formation of an all-party coalition government implacably resolved to fight on to ultimate victory.
2. The "We shall fight on the beaches" speech of 4 June, reporting the success of the Germans in over-running the Netherlands, Belgium and France north of the Somme, and the evacuation of the BEF from Dunkirk, and preparing the British to fight on alone, if necessary.
3. This speech, made after France had sought an armistice on the evening of 16 June.

Since no one has uploaded the full Finest Hour speech, here is the entire 30 minute long speech. Well worth a listen.
Bonus footage. He says he's in the Senate chamber, but I don't think that's possible. There's not enough room. The House chamber? That I could believe.

(987 posts)I mean if you're keeping score and think U.N. General Assembly resolutions are worth more than the paper they're printed on. There's a pretty good article about it in The Guardian:
