Appeals court denies bid to block public release of special counsel's report on Trump Jan. 6 probe

WASHINGTON (AP) A federal appeals court on Thursday denied a bid to block the public release of special counsel Jack Smiths report on President-elect Donald Trumps efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss.
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals turned down a emergency challenge from Trump and his co-defendants in his classified documents case, who are fighting to keep the report under wraps because they say its one-sided and prejudicial.
The report, however, will not immediately be released, and theres no guarantee it will as more legal wrangling is expected. A lower court ruling from Trump-appointed U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon temporarily blocking the Justice Department from releasing the report remains in place for three days.
The defendants could also conceivably ask the conservative-dominated Supreme Court to intervene.

The court of appeals lifted the stay. Release the report NOW.

(7,629 posts)Will be lifted in 3 days. That, I presume, is to give Trump time to file an appeal though the grounds are weak - Special Counsel cases are routinely released once ongoing legal proceedings have ended, such as the J6 case.
The documents case is still active for 2 Trump employees but a copy has been released to the majority and minority leaders of the Justice Committees in Congress. Once those 2 cases are concluded the report should be released,, if not by the Attorney General then by a congressional leader - one would hope by 2026.
