In a series of videos, the suspect in the deadly New Years attack in New Orleans discussed planning to kill his family and having dreams that helped inspire him to join ISIS, according to multiple officials briefed on the investigation.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the 42-year-old man who police suspect drove a pickup truck into a crowd of revelers on Bourbon Street, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens more, made the chilling recordings while driving from his home in Texas to Louisiana, authorities believe.
Jabbar, a US citizen and Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, made reference in the videos to his divorce and how he had at first planned to gather his family for a celebration with the intention of killing them, two officials who had been briefed on the recordings said. But Jabbar said in the videos that he changed his plans and joined ISIS, and referenced several dreams that he had about why he should be joining the terrorist group, according to the officials.

A Texas judge issued a temporary restraining order against Jabbar in 2020 after his second wife asked for one during their divorce case. The order mandated that Jabbar refrain from threats, physical harm or other stipulated behavior against his ex-wife and either of their children, and required her to avoid the same activity. In a court filing, Jabbars ex-wife stated the marriage had become insupportable because of discord or a conflict of personalities.

Sounds like what he really wanted to do was kill his family, then through some sort of distorted thinking decided to make it more "worthwhile". The other weird part is how he had worked himself up to a pretty good job which takes some stability.

A U.S. Army veteran from Texas is the suspect in a bloody New Year's Day attack in New Orleans that killed at least 15 people and injured 30 more.
Federal investigators identified Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, as the man who intentionally rammed a rented pickup into revelers around 3:15 a.m. on Bourbon Street as people were ringing in the new year.
He died in a shootout with police. Two officers were shot and were stable, officials said............................
..........Jabbar served in the Army on active duty from 2006 to 2015, then in the Army Reserve from 2015 to 2020, according to three U.S. defense officials.
He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 and was an administrative clerk. He was a staff sergeant in 2020 when he was honorably discharged.

(64,867 posts)It sounds like he was angry that his wives left him, because he was abusive to them and the children. Under sharia law, his wives wouldn't have been able to leave him. Nobody would have cared if they complained about his abuse.
I can see why he might be attracted to ISIS.

(9,729 posts)...during the recent press conf in N.O. So, naturally, non-believers would be the revelers of New Years Eve. Presumably, believers would be home in their beds, not drinking or carousing, etc.
Another example of the absurdity and malevolence of much of religion.
