Chelsea residents voice concerns ahead of mayoral election

CHELSEA, Ala. (WIAT) — With the Chelsea mayoral election a month away, residents said they want candidates to prioritize creating a downtown area and addressing traffic issues.

The two candidates on the ballot are current city councilman Cody Sumners and local businessman Mike Rochester. Mayor Tony Picklesimer, who was elected to the position in October 2016, is not seeking reelection.

Janet Shaw, who has lived in Chelsea for 16 years, said she believes the city lacks a central gathering place.

“We don’t have just a town center,” Shaw said. “The town itself is very nice. All the people here, you have the small-town feel, but you’re close to everything — but just not having a town center where people can gather.”
