The Biggest Story of the Day went unnoticed by many DUers. Makes me sad.

The fact that the White House was seriously considering suspending Habeous Corpus because there were pissed that judges were interfering with their immigration goals. Also they were considering invoking the Insurrection Act following the murder of Alex Pretti. I read the whole article and was really frightened.

I am really afraid about the midterms. If they start messing with voters or seizing ballots in blue areas there is gonna be an uproar. People are not gonna stand for it and I believe they will show up and raise hell. States may have to call out their National Guards to protect the people and the vote. It is a scenario that the Administration may find ripe for invoking the Insurrection Act.

I truly do not trust that Trump will be willing to give up his power. Especially if it looks like we will take the Senate as well.

Please read the article. It is chilling.

But, IIRC, the article said he was opposed to the suggestion from Miller and Vance to suspend Habeas.

I’m not chilled or afraid - while I don’t welcome such action, if they did try and suspend Habeas, it would trigger the biggest constitutional crisis since the civil war.

Anyone held without Habeas could be ordered immediately released by the courts. Despite mythology to the contrary, this administration follows court orders the vast majority of the time, preferring to get stays pending appeal (which they wouldn’t get in this case) rather than outright defiance.

It might be the catalyst congress would need to impeach and remove the bastard (and I think he knows it, which is why he shot down the idea).

Nothing can stop the Blue Tsunami.

Trump wasn't in opposition, Vance and Miller were encouraging it. The only thing that saved us was a memo by a WH attorney named Scharf.

They go judge shopping and get a quick stay pending appeal in the vast majority of the cases they lose in court. If they don’t get a stay, then they obey, 99% of the time.

The 1% where they don’t quickly and clearly comply is almost always foot dragging or deadline pushing waiting for the stay to be issued.

There is a huge legal and constitutional difference between getting a stay pending appeal and openly defying a court order without a stay.

Just from your first Politico link, there are lots of qualifiers such as “delay” and “obfuscation” that indicate there are far more instances of legal and technical game playing than outright defiance.

People’s rights have been abused, and the game playing is an attempt to avoid contempt citations and disbarment, while failing to meet Miller’s ridiculous deportation quotas.

That’s why Kilmer Garcia is a free man back on US soil, and Liam Ramos is home with his dad in Minnesota.

Secret memos show that the White House debated last year, to a greater degree than previously known, whether to limit habeas corpus rights for undocumented immigrants.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/15/us/politics/trump-scharf-habeas-corpus-insurrection-act.html?unlocked_article_code=1.qVA.udsu.XAy4X9FMTHHA&smid=url-share

Last spring, Will Scharf, an arch-conservative lawyer serving as the White House staff secretary, wrote a secret memo to the chief of staff that reflected growing unease in the West Wing about one of the extreme measures being weighed by Stephen Miller, the powerful adviser driving President Trump’s deportation campaign.

Dated April 29, 2025, and stamped “confidential,” the memo was careful and lawyerly but amounted to a warning against end-running the rule of law. The subject line read: “THE WRIT OF HABEAS CORPUS.”.....

Inside the White House, Mr. Miller, the influential deputy chief of staff, saw an opening for an idea he had raised previously: What if Mr. Trump simply claimed the power to suspend habeas corpus?

Then the locked-up immigrants would be blocked from receiving hearings or even from seeking court orders to prevent their removal from the country. This was an opportunity for Mr. Trump not only to speed up deportations, but also to assert vastly expanded power over a legal system that was getting in his way......

Habeas corpus had been formally suspended only four times, most recently after Pearl Harbor. In every case, the country was at war or facing armed rebellion. Only Lincoln, at the start of the Civil War, had ever claimed the power without congressional authorization, and only during a long congressional recess......

Under immense public pressure, the administration would subsequently take a different course of action. The most vocal immigration hard-liner, Gregory Bovino, the Customs and Border Protection commander-at-large, was removed from his post, and the administration held back on ICE pushes in cities in the weeks after Mr. Pretti’s death.

Yet just as the idea of suspending habeas corpus was set aside but never fully abandoned by some inside the White House, the Insurrection Act, at least in the eyes of its proponents, would remain a loaded weapon in a West Wing eager to test the limits of presidential power.

There is a long and detailed article on the discussions in the trump White House on suspending the writ of habeas corpus or invoking the Insurrection Act. After reading this article, I am scared. Firing Bovino was the right move but I fear that if trump loses the midterms, we may see the writ of habeas corpus suspended.

Dem AGs plot to thwart Trump election interference
They’re running war-games as they brace for what Trump could do.

Democratic attorneys general are bracing for President Donald Trump to interfere in the midterm elections — and war-gaming how to stop him.

The party’s top prosecutors have been strategizing for months about how to counter a series of increasingly extreme scenarios they fear could play out this fall. They have huddled in hotel conference rooms and over Zoom meetings to run tabletop exercises anticipating the president’s moves and choreographing responses.

(but not on the 'front lines'-- I lack physical courage because I lost 'my immortality' when I got old,
