and sympathy should be felt for the sick.

Debilitating or disfiguring illness and extensive rehab/reconstruction period.

Settling down a virus or systemic inflammation could involve months of steroids. Might be a possibility.

Totally a guess.

Further, whatever it is, he owes it to his constiuents to be transparent. They deserve representation. If he is unable to provide it in the long term, he needs to resign.
