1. A religious figure who tells you how to vote.
2. A politician who tells you how to pray
3. A draft dodger who tells you how to be patriotic.
On point.

(1,815 posts)Russia has a military draft. Is avoiding that unpatriotic given the war in Ukraine is immoral? William Calley and Benedict Arnold both served in the military.
And plenty of religious leaders don't directly tell you who to vote for, but tell you to vote for people who feed the poor or bring peace and in any election sadly that's often
Unfortunately distilling things into easy sound bites doesn't always reflect a complicated reality.

(11,194 posts)You are so correct.
Of course, there is the fact that we as a nation do love to make things exceedingly complicated when they really don't need to be.
And, placating that desire is not helpful either.
Usually, anytime someone talks about 'complications', it is because of the desire to 'get a piece of the action'. The entire 'complicating' factor is other greedy people wanting in, or trying to stop you from getting what they believe is 'theirs'.

(27,779 posts)immoral, stupid war, and the US committed multiples war crimes there. Would you suggest a "patriot" should go to prison and be raped to prove their patriotism rather than avoid the draft? I'm not talking about people like Trump and George W. Bush who dodged the draft not because they were morally opposed to a war but because they didn't want to serve their country risk their lives for their country. The proof of the pudding is that when they both became politicians and gained the highest office in the land, they launched illegal, immoral wars. A draft dodger who avoids going to war for valid moral reasons can indeed give good advice about being patriotic.
