General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI never thought I would say this, but after seeing Trump's bat shit crazy post this morning
I would try to get a delegation of willing Democratic Congressional figures to go to the White House and tell Trump if he resigns the presidency, we won't prosecute you, but you and only you! If you don't agree, we are going to hold you responsible for ever illegal act you've committed. You have 48 hours to decide.
Yes, I know; Republicans always get to skate for their crimes and it has made me so angry over the years, but the man is mentally unstable, has an equally insane Secretary of Defense (won't call it war), and has the nuclear codes. All of the planet is in danger, and if the GOP won't stop it, I would at least try to see if he'd go for it.

(4,061 posts)and unlike Trump, he's actually smart. He'd be just as crooked stealing the vote, but not stupid enough to ignore warnings about the Straights of Hormuz. Nor is he likely in the Epstein files, or guilty of J6 or stealing documents. Everything that might bring down Trump, JD is not implicated in. No, he has no charisma, but all they have to do is come up with a Quanon like conspiracy with him as the hero.
I still think we have to discredit the whole administration to get ourselves out of this.

(8,868 posts)they want him to die in office because graceless buffoon Vance can be intimidated and controlled... and maybe if he runs for the presidency in 2028 and wins, Republicans can retain power...and with Vance in the Oval Office, Trump's gang of venal wretches lose sway...

(8,819 posts)case, but courts are the very last guardrail after norms, morals and ethics, common sense, advisors, in house lawyers, congress, the interests of other countries, and fairness guardrails have all been exhausted. We shouldn't even have to go to court to defend against an unhinged, disordered executive but this is where we are.
Loopholes in laws, a vulnerable constitution, vast wealth, and complicit gop destroyed the nation's defenses against tyranny. There's one last desperate guardrail that other countries have used but which we have not...since we were a colony.

So like Tesha was saying, the only thing that could matter to him more than money and power would be keeping himself out of jail.

But, I am NOT letting those evil bastards off the hook. None of them.

Seriously, this cannot go on. Each and every day is a new affront to democracy, the rule of law, and sanity.
The man is deranged and has no checks and balances, he has declared war on the world, including this country.
This has to stop - NOW.

(3,285 posts)Then in January the guardrails are coming back!
The end is in sight. We need to inform them we will be asking for executions for Crimes against Humanity, The Constitution and attempting the overthrow of our way of life! Treason! (The whole book!) Art. 134! Everything!
Repent! Or else!
I would cite the end of Nicolae Ceaușescu of Romania in 1989. He and his wife.
I could live with this for Chump and the bitch! I Won't Care, Will You?!
Only then can we back down from this nightmare and rebuild America.

What you're suggesting is letting him off the hook despite all the crap he has pulled, and the republicans have rubber-stamped. I see no need to "rescue" the republicans. I'm happy to see them go down with the dimwit ship. The people tortured & killed in El Salvador (don't kid yourself - we know what is happening there), Renee and Alex murdered in cold blood in the streets of Minneapolis. Families broken up, economy destroyed. Just NO.

Not only does it reflect a rapidly unraveling president, it comes just days after he expressed indifference to the Strait of Hormuz during his WH address. (âWe donât need it. We havenât needed it, and we donât need itâ)

(3,775 posts).....this would be consistent with really bad precedents, like Ford's pardon of Nixon, the blanket pardons following Iran-Contra, and Obama's decision to "look forward" and not really investigate his predecessor's administration.
Every time this happens, the next president learns just how impregnable they are.
kst
(77 posts)I see two big problems with this idea.
First, it would set a horrible precedent. Or rather, it would reinforce the precedent set by the Nixon pardon. That you can commit all the crimes you like, and get away with nothing worse than losing your job.
Second, Congressional Democrats have no authority to make such a deal. Congress doesn't prosecute.
