Destruction of vital US radar aircraft could hamper ability to spot Iran threats

The destruction of a US Air Force E-3 Sentry aircraft in an Iranian strike on a Saudi Arabia air base could damage US abilities to spot incoming Iranian threats at distance, analysts say.

Dramatic images of the wrecked aircraft, geolocated by CNN, show its tail broken off and its distinct rotating radar dome –– a critical part of the airborne warning and control system, or AWACS –– on the ground at the Prince Sultan Air Base.

The loss of the AWACS is “a serious blow to (US) surveillance capabilities,” said CNN military analyst Cedric Leighton, a former US Air Force colonel who has flown on the aircraft.

“It can potentially impact (US) ability to control combat aircraft and vector them to their targets or protect them from engagements of hostile aircraft and missile systems,” he said.

The service had 31 E-3s in active use at the start of this decade, but conducted a significant retirement activity which meant that only 17 of the adapted 707s were in its inventory at the time of the strike in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, the first of two 737NGs slated for conversion into the E-7A Wedgetail configuration as prototypes for the USAF recently arrived in Birmingham, England. While it has previously outlined a potentially 26-unit acquisition, Washington has yet to fully commit to the project.

Notably, secretary of war Pete Hegseth has described crewed AEW&C platforms as “not survivable in the modern battlefield”, and instead favours a future satellite-based air surveillance capability.

"could" becomes "will" becomes "has."

"Might" becomes "will becomes "is."

Watch for tense/mood/aspect. And you'll see all kinds of games played.

"X should" becomes "X might" becomes "X will" becomes "X has." In the course of a few days, but, you know, nothing's changed except spin. Instead of +/- 1/2, it can go from +6/2 to 0. And still be considered "science." Right, like leechcraft.
