VA-05: "Dopesick" Author Beth Macy (D) to Announce at 5:30 pm Today in Roanoke for Congress

See below for a press release from the Beth Macy for VA06 campaign, which will formally announce later today, at 5:30 pm, in Roanoke. Of course, as the press release points out, the current Congressman for VA06, Ben Cline (R), has (among other things) “voted against addiction treatment, against lowering healthcare costs and against investments our rural communities desperately need.” Also, “Time and again, he’s sided with pharmaceutical companies and party extremists while families in the 6th District struggle to get by.”

So clearly, VA06 would be FAR better off with a different/better representative in the US House. So currently, per the FEC, there are two other Democrats – Ken Mitchell and Pete Barlow – running for the chance to take on and potentially defeat Cline. That will be a tall order, of course, given the deep-“red” nature of the district (went to Donald Trump over Kamala Harris 61%-37% and Hung Cao over Tim Kaine 59%-41% in 2024; went to Cline 63%-35% in 2022; etc.). However, there’s a chance VA06 could end up being redistricted next spring, if General Assembly Democrats pass a constitutional amendment, if voters approve it, and if the new map is drawn as a 10D-1R Democratic “gerrymander” (leaving just VA09 Congressman Morgan Griffith as “safe”), up from the current 6D-5R. So stay tuned on that front, but for now, good luck to the three Democrats running here; may the best/strongest candidate win!

P.S. Beth Macy is impressive – “daughter of a factory worker and housepainter and a first-generation college graduate”; “former Roanoke Times reporter” (where she “covered the stories of people and communities across western Virginia, listening without judgment and digging for the truth, even when it was uncomfortable”) and “author of ‘Dopesick,’ among others”; etc.

I don't see how they could do a 10/1 map that wasn't out of compliance with the VRA dsc Nov 2025 #1

or at great risk of backfiring. I think either 8/3 or 9/2 are better ideas.
