(2,028 posts)As someone with a LOT people in their family and friends who work, or worked, in health care, I'm keenly aware that the terms are not synonymous.
Health Care is not rising 75%, and in fact, the inflation already happened. "Health Care" is already outrageously expensive across the board, and that is where the actual underlying problem resides. And although Trump steals shit all the time, in this particular case, the government ceasing to subsidize people's health insurance premiums as much as they were before because enhanced subsidies are sunsetting? That is not theft, and Trump is also not the one who's responsible for it. Congress is.
I get that we need to keep our messaging simple, but this messaging is particularly inaccurate.

(1,063 posts)But they were set to expire. And that's a relatively small percentage of people on ACA and getting subsidies. Most people get insurance through their employer and their insurance costs are going up because the medical costs aren't sustainable. The two biggest insurers in Massachusetts, both nonprofits, lost $780 million dollars in 2024. That's not sustainable and has nothing to do with ACA subsidies.
The reason health insurance costs are going up is because we're using a lot more health care, and especially very expensive drugs and treatments. Those GLP1s for weight loss aren't going to pay off in terms of reduced future costs for a long time for example. And new caner treatments cost a fortune.
Blaming Trump isn't going to meaningfully address the crisis. Obviously he isn't helping matters, but we can't just say returning to the subsidies is a fix because it's not. We gambled on having control of Congress when we extended the subsidies in a way that let the Inflation Reduction Act pass via budget reconciliation.
