Man arrested for posting exact quote of Trump in response to Charlie Kirk vigil

Last edited Fri Oct 10, 2025, 04:43 AM - Edit history (1)

Larry Bushart Jr., 61, a former police officer, posted a meme of President Donald Trump in the Perry County community group page as members of the page were organizing a vigil to honor Kirk.

In response, Bushart posted a meme of Trump that featured a photo of the president with a quote he gave just one day after a 2024 mass shooting at Perry High School in Iowa
“‘We have to get over it.’ – Donald Trump, on the Perry High School mass shooting one day after,” the text on the meme read.

However, members of the group interpreted Bushart’s post as a threat against their local high school, which is also called Perry County High School.

I agree - very rude of Trump to tell parents to "get over" their kids being murdered.

On the other hand, Charlie "Stone the Gays" "2A is worth some deaths each year" Kirk is with Jesus now, so why be sad about that?

. . . interpreted the man's meme as promising that there will be a shooting at their Perry High School in the near future, whereupon Trump will state (the day afterward) that the community needs to move on.

Of course, the man who posted his meme did not intend to convey that thought. However, some community members drew that interpretation.

As I understand it, the man is passionate about the cause of eliminating mass shootings. He had posted other remarks expressing his opinion that Kirk's legacy should not be memorized as being beneficial to society. I think the man will not be convicted of the charge. However, the ambuguity of his meme could be argued to justify the filing of the charge.
