https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cx2nzlj2j4ktUS President Donald Trump has announced that "Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan". "This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line", Trump says on Truth Social
Trump is "considering travelling to the Middle East" in the coming days, according to the White House. Mediators from the US, Egypt and Qatar in Sharm El-Sheikh have been attempting to broker an agreement for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas
The negotiations come two years and two days after Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the 7 October 2023 attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages. At least 67,183 have been killed by Israeli military operations in Gaza since then, the Hamas-run health ministry says.

(16,608 posts)I hope the Israelis will let the Palestinians eat, at least for a while.
Then there will be some issue that resumes the fighting.

(5,952 posts)once the hostages are returned. Either side will then have ample opportunity to renege on the agreement based either on real or imaginary issues.
I'm giving it a couple of weeks or so b/f it hits the fan again.

(4,444 posts)The fact that Hamas is thanking Trump makes me suspicious. In the announcement they thank the countries, but in the case of the US they singled out Trump. Was this to flatter him?

Netanyahu has already said he opposes withdrawal of troops. There will be no "agreed upon line".
Once the hostages are released, "peace" is over.

(7,204 posts)...to regroup, assess and re target. He'll just make up some lie how Hamas violated the terms and start shooting again. Once the war ends he's toast and he knows it. And they still have to negotiate who will govern Gaza later and he sure as hell doesn't want a one station solution, even when a significant portion of the UN left the chamber when it was his turn to speak. He doesn't care what the world thinks of him.
Nor does he care about the country or its people. Only of himself like most dictators.

(685 posts)Biden should've told Bibi enough is enough! No more weapons to Israel. This would've forced the end of the war.

(8,431 posts)Im old enough to remember that Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire and hostage release in January, which was the first part of a three-phase plan to end the war and begin reconstruction of Gaza.
That was announced to fanfare with celebrations in the streets -- and then what happened?
