Oh for fawk sake.....a tRump dollar coin???

The Treasury Department is planning a dollar coin featuring Donald Trump to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States, it emerged today.

The tails side of the coin features Trump holding his fist in front of an American flag with the words, 'Fight, fight, fight', in reference to his famous words after being shot in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The image of Trump standing with blood dripping from his face in front of the Stars and Stripes was seared into the imaginations of American voters during the election campaign and is doubtless one of the most iconic political images in history.

The heads side shows Trump in profile with the historic dates: '1776 - 2025'.

There is precedent for a sitting president to be featured on a coin at such an anniversary. Calvin Coolidge appeared on the 1926 sesquicentennial half dollar, marking the 150th anniversary of American independence.

No other sitting has ever been depicted on a US coin. Indeed, federal law prohibits living persons from appearing on circulating money, requiring at least two years after the death of presidents.

The most recent president to appear on a coin is George HW Bush who was commemorated on the 2020 Presidential dollar, a collector's edition released after the Republican's death in 2018.

'Despite the radical left's forced shutdown of our government, the facts are clear: Under the historic leadership of President Donald J. Trump, our nation is entering its 250th anniversary stronger, more prosperous, and better than ever before,' a Treasury Department spokesman said.

The law refers to "currency and securities" which is legal parlance means paper money produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing while coins are categorized separately produced by the US mint.

I guess the blueskyer couldn't take 5 minutes to google it.

"Commemorative Coins", as this would be.. HAVE BEEN MINTED with the likeness of living people before. There is precedence.

The last time was in 1995 when Eunice Shriver was pictured on a commemorative coin for the Special Olympics World Games.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kirkogunrinde/2025/10/03/us-treasury-explores-new-trump-coin-us-treasurer-says-despite-legal-hurdles

U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach shared drafts for a new $1 coin with imagery of President Donald Trump to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, despite it being illegal to put a living person on U.S. currency.

Key Facts
Beach shared images on X showing drafts for a potential $1 coin with images of President Donald Trump on both sides.

Beach, who supervises the U.S. Mint, said the coin was to “honor America’s 250th birthday,” referring to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The message showed the front and back of a coin with a profile of Trump’s head on both sides and the words “FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT,” a reference to the words Trump yelled to the crowd after a 2024 assassination attempt, also on one of the sides.

Beach said more details about the coin would be announced after the government shutdown concludes.

According to federal law, only the portrait of deceased individuals may appear on United States currency and securities.

Earlier this year, Trump created a special task force to plan events surrounding the upcoming anniversary.

The U.S. Mint is a bureau of the Department of Treasury responsible for the creation of coins. Only the faces of five American presidents and two founding fathers are on bills in circulation. The Treasury Department says it considers "persons whose places in history the American people know well" as candidates whose images would feature on coins. In 2011, the Treasury suspended the production of $1 coins due to a surplus, but continued to make some for collection. Congress signed legislation in 2020 during President Trump’s first term authorising the Treasury Secretary to issue $1 dollar coins during the 2026 calendar year that would be “emblematic of the United States semiquincentennial.” President Donald Trump would be the first living president to have his image on currency if the proposed $1 coins are minted.

The current intent is for these to be real coins. There will be some fun litigation on this

28. LOL, did you read the material you posted? The proposed trump coin would not be allowed under the law you cited
Sat Oct 4, 2025, 08:01 PM
Oct 4

Did you read the statute that you posted? The act you cited is clear that:

(Sec. 6) No head and shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person may be included in the design on the reverse of specified coins. Treasury may develop and execute a marketing, advertising, promotional, and educational program to promote the collecting of all the coins and medals authorized by this bill.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/1923

The proposed trump coin clearly violates this requirement.

As for Eunice Shriver, this coin was minted pursuant to a special act of congress that waived the restriction on living persons being on a coin. The original prohibition is still in effect even under the statute you cited but may not had read. The Eunice Shiver coin was minted solely based on a congressional waiver of the act. For trump to get his face on a coin, Congress will have to pass that waiver.

Again, here is more on this waiver

A waiver was required for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games commemorative silver dollar because it depicted a living person, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, which was against U.S. Mint policy at the time.
Commemorative coin program: The coin was created to commemorate the 1995 Special Olympics World Games, which took place in New Haven, Connecticut.

Design and waiver: The U.S. Mint's policy prohibits the depiction of a living person on coinage. For the Special Olympics coin, Eunice Kennedy Shriver's portrait was featured on the obverse as the founder of the organization.

Congressional intervention: The Citizens Commemorative Coin Advisory Committee rejected the idea of putting a living person on the coin. However, the Special Olympics organization lobbied for the coin, leading to a waiver being granted through a congressional act, the Special Olympics Commemorative Coin Act. This allowed the coin to proceed with Shriver's likeness.

Historical significance: The coin is notable in American numismatic history as the first U.S. coin to feature a living woman.

If trump really wants his face on this coin, then trump can get Congress to pass a waiver. Without such a waiver, trump's face cannot appear on a coin.

Do you want to guess the odds of Congress granting such a waiver?

If trump wants to be on a coin, then congress can grant a waiver that will require 60 votes in the senate. It took a congressional waiver to get Eunice Shriver on a coin in 1995

Again, I urge you to read the material you post.

Before law school, I debated on the high school and college level and then had fun judging college and high school debate throughout law school. If you want to debate, you need to use facts to support your claims and it helps if you actually read and understand the facts you use in such argument. Here you evidently did NOT read the material posted because that material contradicted your claims.

Again, there is a statutory prohibition on the use of the likeness of a person who is still alive on a coin or other currency. That statutory prohibition was waived for Eunice Schriver (perhaps Senator Teddy Kennedy played a role in such waiver) to appear on a coin for the Special Olympics. I would love to see trump try to get a congressional waiver of this prohibition.

I object to the use of trump's likeness on any coins for a host of reasons. If the Department of Treasury attempts to ignore the law, there will be some fun litigation that I will have fun following.

For a change, this the perfect moment to field Ocelot’s daily question: “Is he dead yet? “ because sure as Nanny Ogg made scumble from little green apples, he’s supposed to be dead before he can have his face on a US coin.

Now excuse me while I go find puppy and kitten videos so I don’t shriek.

37. MaddowBlog-Treasury eyes a commemorative dollar coin for Trump, with plans for a 2026 rollout
Tue Oct 7, 2025, 03:00 PM
Tuesday

It might sound like a weird joke, but there’s an actual plan to make a legal tender $1 coin next year that would glorify the incumbent president.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/trump-dollar-coin-2026-rollout-rcna235974

It’s against this backdrop that NBC News reported:

The Treasury on Friday shared draft images of a $1 commemorative coin, featuring President Donald Trump’s visage, that the United States Mint is preparing in honor of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Trump’s instantly recognizable profile is featured on the ‘heads’ side of the coin. On the ‘tails’ side, the coin will have an image of Trump with his first raised, standing in front of an American flag.

.....I should probably emphasize that this is not a joke. The report is not satire. This is not intended to make the administration look foolish for the sake of comedy......

Putting aside questions of propriety, how would this be legal? The answer is, it might not be. The New York Times reported:

The Treasury is authorized to mint the coins for a year, according to the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020. The coins must have ‘designs emblematic of the U.S. semiquincentennial,’ the legislation says. It is not clear that Mr. Trump’s image can be featured on a coin. An 1866 law enshrined a tradition that only deceased people could appear on U.S. currency to avoid the appearance that America was a monarchy.

Let’s also not overlook the fact that the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 also states, “No head and shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person may be included in the design on the reverse of any coin under subsections (x), (y), and (z).”

I wish that this was satire.
