General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI saw some garbage recently about how all Kamala had to do was make one comment about
The devastating situation happening to the Palestinian people, Gaza etc.
Gee, wonder what the fuck all this is😡
Balancing Israel's right to defense and Palestinian suffering: In her August 2024 speech at the Democratic National Convention, Harris stated, "I will always stand up for Israel's right to defend itself," citing the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas. However, she also described the situation in Gaza as "devastating" and "heartbreaking," calling for an end to the "suffering of the Palestinian people".
Emphasizing a two-state solution: Throughout the campaign, Harris reiterated her support for a two-state solution, stating that the outcome must ensure Israel's security while also allowing for Palestinian self-determination, dignity, and freedom.
Calling for a ceasefire and hostage deal: Harris consistently called for a ceasefire deal that would secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. This stance aligned with the Biden administration's policy, and she often framed the two-state solution as the ultimate path toward a more durable peace.
Pushing back against Netanyahu: In her memoir, 107 Days, published in September 2025, Harris detailed a tense July 2024 meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She wrote that she forcefully challenged his denial of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and believed he was "running out the clock" in hopes of a Trump victory.
Response to protesters: Harris frequently faced interruptions from pro-Palestinian protesters at her events. In response, she often defended her position, stating she understood their concerns and had privately pushed the Biden administration to speak out more on the humanitarian crisis. At her final rally in Michigan, a state with a significant Arab American population, she promised to "end the war in Gaza".
Context of comments
Harris's campaign comments were made amid intense political pressure from different parts of her party.
Progressives: She faced criticism from progressive Democrats and the "uncommitted" movement, who felt her stance was too close to President Biden's and not forceful enough in demanding an end to the war.
Swing states: Her comments were carefully crafted to appeal to key constituencies in swing states like Michigan, where the war's impact on Arab American voters was a significant factor.
Pro-Israel allies: At the same time, she worked to reassure pro-Israel allies of her continued support.

(252 posts)"One thing" but now the goalposts will be moved....countdown, 1..2...3..
Someone also just attacked Harris in another thread as "not being good enough" but I note that seems to get a pass....exactly the point being made. It seems you CAN criticize certain and possibly upcoming potential Presidential candidates...and thats okay

(37,885 posts)Did you notice there is no support for "I saw some garbage recently . . . " ? No link. No suggestion of where the statement was seen. I don't think I've heard a single person say that Harris needed to "make one comment." Yes - she needed to do more on Palestine, including distancing herself from Biden. But I've never seen anyone suggest that "making one comment" would have made a difference.
It is pretty easy to knock down a straw man of your own creation.

(252 posts)Why should she distance herself from Biden? Like him she believed in a 2 State Solution, but only one without Hamas as Leaders
Now the Gazans have a No-State Solution and millions more impoverished people are in hunger and without medical care around the world...and are dying from that....just as Vice President Harris warned would happen...things have gone from bad to worse. Some people are loathe to acknowledge they have some responsibility for that because they think."Kamala Harris was not good enough"....it was just a Purity test...

(11,452 posts)I think we need to stop blaming Democrats, really. The right-wing pig media is a propaganda machine and unfortunately, they have a lot of power. Too much. I wish Democrats would have used a similar tactic against Repubs and argue hard. Fight fire with fire. Speak directly to Republicans about why Kamala was better for them than Drumpf. Maybe they would have listened..

(252 posts)...that fell for the astroturf too. And the propaganda from Trollfarms happened in 2016 too. Bernie ultimately admitted that his supporters were the target of that propaganda as well as the Rightwing.
We cannot do better unless we understand that those that constantly attack Democrats as "not good enough" and say things like "I will hold my nose and vote for them" understand that they are prime targets ....they seem to think its okay to shit on the traditional and supported by the majority of Democrats.....while demanding nothing about their preferred candidate is ever uttered .....even if that candidate has been attacking Democrats themselves for some time...
They hold Democrats to unrealistic constantly changing purity tests but their preferred candidate is sancrosanct and are untouchable

(3,610 posts)would have helped her--- but probably not enough
Fighting back on the "money for trans operations for convicts" commercial
might also have helped..... but I never saw any pushback on that in Michigan---
and that fucking Trump ad ran 24-7 for the last two weeks of the campaign----
Reminded me of the 'Willie Horton' ads from Bush Senior against Michael Dukakis (1988)

(10,494 posts)On October 8, 2024, during an interview on ABC's The View, Vice President Kamala Harris was asked by co-host Sunny Hostin: "Would you have done something differently than President Biden during the past four years?" Harris responded, "There is not a thing that comes to mind."
Ive read reports that Kamala regrets making this statement as the Republicans ran with it. It went viral with millions of views The clip was viewed 80 million times on X, it was in GOP adds and many podcasts, Trump & other Republican politicians. kept replaying it.
The Republican campaign was run big on social media - showing the clip over and over on social media.
So, many people were not aware of the nuances she felt about Gaza - they just saw the clip over and over and over.

(252 posts)So did Joe Biden...
Kamala Harris was the Gazans ONLY chance for a State.... now they have none. ... no chance at all. We said it...Kamala said it...but somehow that just wasn't good enough for some..
Things can always get worse....and they most certainly have... and for millions more outside of Gaza too. Some people don't want to have to face that fact.....because they don't want to have to recognize their share of the responsibility for what's happening now....they want to just cover that up so that they can do it all over again....as if nothing ever happened. Lather, rinse, repeat...
Things would be soooo much different right now if some had of given Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden the respect they deserved...
I just dont get over causing even more people pain that easily...it leaves me salty

(92,792 posts)About what he was doing in Gaza was wrong.
But she also spoke of the sex assault women in Israel dealt during thev attack by Hamas and how horrible that was and people hated her for it.
