International non-profit Civicus says ‘sustained attacks on civic freedoms’ put US on par with El Salvador and Kenya

A group of global civil society organizations have placed the US on a watchlist for urgent concern over the health of its civic society, alongside Turkey, Serbia, El Salvador, Indonesia and Kenya.

On Wednesday, a new report released by the non-profit Civicus placed the US on its watchlist following “sustained attacks on civic freedoms” across the country, according to the group.

The United States appears to be sliding deeper into the quicksands of authoritarianism. Peaceful protests are confronted with military force, critics are treated as criminals, journalists are targeted, and support for civil society and international cooperation have been cut back,” Mandeep Tiwana, Civicus’s secretary general, said in a statement.

Six months into Donald Trump’s second term, a bizarre assault on fundamental freedoms and constitutional safeguards has become the new normal,” he added.

repubes hate America.

They intend to bring us to our knees for the sake of their vile, evil-born kristofascist-technocracy wasteland, Inc.

I have been more than concerned about our crumbling 'civic society' for close to thirty years.

Glad that an organization that promotes a more civil society has realized this.

Rather late, of course (maybe too late?), but hey...

Doesn't appear that Democratic leadership---or the media, or big law firms, or prominent universities---are in the mood to take any effective counter-action. And what's so unforgivable about this situation is that trump is so fucking VULNERABLE, right now. Way beyond frustrating.

Why is this important? THEY WANT YOU TO FEEL POWERLESS AND GIVE UP. THEY WANT YOU TO THINK WE ARE DOING NOTHING.

i hear some fiery speeches from Democrats in Congress, most of whom vote the right way, delay tactics on bills they can't ultimately stop, fire from Corey Booker, Jasmine Crocket, AOC, jamie Raskin, and others. While Republicans cower in fear of making a rational vote, Democrats are doing it every day in the face of threats of prosecution and investigation from Trump. Let's have their backs.

Harvard is stepping up. An alliance of universities pledging to resist and support Harvard and others. A lot of law firms stepped up and formed an alliance to resist. Judges have for the most part held firm to rule of law. There are National Guard members in California calling in to help lines worried that they'll be asked to carry out illegal orders. There are citizens tracking ICE and making their work more difficult.

As for media, at least late night is showing up.

A brilliant young couple has founded Indivisible and is holding weekly online meetings plus a 3 series online training in nonviolent resistance. Tens of thousands are involved but it needs to grow. Use the link copied from their websit below:

The training cited above helps us understand the importance of the kind of action all of us can take, and strategies to step it up in the coming months BEFORE the authoritarian window closes. Clicking on link will let you sign up for the remaining training, and probably access recordings of the first two.

Effective counter-action by our leaders is hard. They are the minority.
Maybe it is for us, a grass roots group, to run the mass resistance while our elected leaders are very busy doing what they can do.

Yes, there are some politicians not meeting the moment. Everything feels not enough when Republicans weild the reigns of power. But every thing we are doing big and small matters. Remember, Trump is stupid and despots have a way of contributing unforced errors. While Trump continues to explain Epstein, lets get busy.

And ann International tribunal needs to issue a warning that he is a murdeous dictator for harming innocent people by racial profiling. And torturing them and abducting them off the streets against their will.

He’s violating our constitution by not granting people the right to a fair trial. But unfortunately our Supreme Court are also criminals protecting Hitler/ Mussolini 2.0.

But in my heart I know justice will catch up to him. I hope sooner rather than later.
