(535 posts)but this is probably the worst it will be, that is, meh. To get a really bad trans-Pacific tsunami, you need at least a M9.0 quake, like 1946 Alaska, 1960 Chile or 1964 Alaska.

The final alarm has sounded on Hawaii. Midway has observed 7 waves so they may be much bigger than the predicted 3 waves.

(76,810 posts)In the 12 minute span between 0354UTC and 0406UTC the ocean receded 2.44 then rapidly rose by 3.19 and is still rising at Sand Island, Midway Islands. In 12 minutes.
Thats a significant water level change indicative of the tsunami that is now impacting the islands.

(53,408 posts)I have researched the Japanese tsunami after their 9.2 quake in 2011 which had sets of waves 33 meters/100 feet hit them. The residents train to evacuate and the scientists all agree that the safest thing to train people to do is to RUN!!! ASAP!!!! to a higher elevation before a tsunami warning even tells them to do so. That's why there were considerably fewer deaths compared to the 9.1 Sri Lankan tsunami of 2004.
I followed up this research about 1 week ago when I studied the Alaskan earthquake of 9.2 in 1964. Scientists agree that there should be signs posted and residents trained to "just run to a higher elevation right away". There are signs posted showing people to run up a hill. It doesn't even need to be a steep hill, just one that is about 30' above sea level.

(19,941 posts)Lots of us spent a whole bunch of time in traffic. I didnt, but it was pretty hairy for some. Most business is caught up and sent people home early which was good. I just left my safe community space up mauka(toward the mountains) and returned home. It wasnt within a tsunami zone when I moved to this side if the island, but it is now, or close enough.
