(67,252 posts)It's been raining a lot this past week in central NC. Last night the Triad area (which includes Alamance County) got hit with another slow moving storm. People were prepared but it's still devastating. Local article here.

(4,094 posts)But I do feed my wife's habit at the local Dunkin. I don't look at the price, however, because it isn't relevant to my purchasing decision for what should be obvious reasons.

If you pray for a cookie, you won't get one.
I'd much rather have the two bucks.
Think. Again.
(22,412 posts)...all the praying isn't working.
Maybe we should try something different, like not burning fossil fuels or something.

(14,380 posts)that means you thought that Jesus wasn't thinking right, when he got up this morning and figured a flood in Carolina would be a good way to shake things up. Things are probably getting boring in his area of heaven (2 light years, east of Proxima Centuri) and there needs to be some fun watching the fools scurrying around, worrying about their shit while the rich people? Shit, they live on the high ground. They ain't got nuthin' to worry.

(11,517 posts)God is Fed up with all the fake religious fools like the faith leader tongue talking women in the White House of Evil and the idiots Bowing to the likes of her, and Trump the child raper and Fox that are only in it for cash and greed, and using his name to steal it all. Again. And he is gonna flood us and burn us is segments so everyone can watch.
Is this God blessing America and are we to Trust in God? I mean, Christian kids at camps for him
And he keeps the trumps, the Honans, the Noems the ICE thugs, the Putins , the DeSantans alive and to prosper.
Anybody think those kids and counselors were not praying their asses off as they were being swept away. Or the Tornado victim's, of the mass shooting victims did not pray as shots rang out? Or parents on their way to the camps or schools or concerts, were not praying as they rushed to the scenes for their kids or loved ones.
Like stated here already. Pray for what?
Praying and voting for the criminals that fully intend to keep destroying his gift to us, with poison fir absurd amounts of cash, is just stupid.
Every damn possible fix for the destruction of earth just got voted out. With loud cheers from the destroyers. Pray for them to have a fast track to hell.
But I think we are all headed that way. Or he is just bringing hell to us right here.

(11,517 posts)Middle NC Chapel Hill Durham, got hit hard last week. Very little converge. And seeing this tonight is just sickening. New York New Jersey last night, and the New Mexico the day afterTexas. Little coverage.
Fires out west and all we see is Trump, his thugs ISIS gangs, a useless Congress on their knees in the Capital Well after robing us all with the BBB, for the rich, PRAYING.
And. Burning tons of food, those poor refugees could get it, maybe without maggots in it.
And according to GQP they pray all the time, and keep getting more and more. What Loving God would allow this if prayers worked?
I did not mean to insult those here that still have faith in prayer, I have lost any hope and I am just sick of the evil that is flooding our whole damn country from a regime claiming to be Gods chosen.
Did the Tornado victims this spring in Red Haven USA get any help? Noem and Miller should be in hell right now. If prayers worked.

(16,640 posts)Were you OK? I lived in Charlotte for ten years and when ever we got a "gully washer" (as the Southerners say) it would just run off the ground which was brick red clay soil. I lived there during hurricane Hugo and no one thought it would reach Charlotte but it did.

(41,089 posts)If any hell is brought to us, it's brought by those other humans, not God.
Those who are not power worshippers of some imaginary punishing God know that
God as an infinite being, doesn't micromanage his creation to do harm to humans. He created earth, sky, water, and their finite material natures have been polluted because greedy lovers of wealth and power in the fossil fuel industries have not given a damn about that world, and climate's cascading effects now have their effect on other finite humans who pray for God's providence.
These events are cautionary tales to those who deny or forget that climate change is bearing down on everyone. Some will vote accordingly, some will continue to believe and vote for those who tell corporate lies.

(11,517 posts)Well said. From what little I remember from churches, the end will be a major battle between good and evil. Well, the EVIL is here now, it IS the GQP and Trump, which is as much anti Christian as we could dream up, and in our Face.
Good best get to showing up.
I would bet those Christian refugees in Millers torture camps are praying hard. Will they be rewarded for their endless faith and obedience? Not about to bet that happens.

(41,089 posts)between good and evil, and evil's been all around us humans from our births. Now that it's rearing its hydra head, most people finally recognize it for what it is but don't know, and probably don't care, who is behind it. So they compound the battle by going along with evil because they don't want to have to make a free will choice about either side when they're busy enjoying the worldly benefits of others' evildoing...
so there's that, right?
Early Christians were indeed murdered and were not criminals at all. Believers' and atheists' intentional or collateral deaths have happened all over the world, and now we're getting a taste of what fascist violence is when it comes out from the dark corners of fossil fuel and Koch/Musk oligarch networks.
God doesn't exist as some ATM servant to save free will humans who, by their free will choices, have hurt their world and therefore each other. He has already given them a way to save their immortal souls; now their free wills have to cooperate with that previous help and grace.
2nd Great Commandment - Love your neighbor. Love is as love does.

(11,517 posts)I guess, being right here in Helena Hell, gave me a glimpse of the apocalyptic experience, and all this recent day in and day out flooding hits really damn close.
And the Moses Mikes all we can do is pray, and the visual of Congress in the Capital Well praying after the BBB, my faith is worn. Lots of people are feeling the same with loses of late. Lots of death and long time missing bodies here, as is in Texas. Still reeling from it all, with PTSD and anxiety from each new flood disaster. And hurricanes will come.
ancianita
(41,089 posts)I agree with you. All this disaster tries humans' souls and faith. We have to help everyone we can but, to use a crashing plane analogy, we have to put our oxygen masks on first before we can help anyone else, or else we'll be no help to anyone OR ourselves.
Seeing legitimate suffering (caused by others' selfishness) all around is hard, but it's our job to alleviate it as best we can. We join with others who know things, and they join with experts who are an authority about the causes of these sufferings, and as a helping community of neighbors we "do the work." Sometimes it involves going after those who cause other humans' suffering to stop them; sometimes it involves just helping others survive.
Project 2025 got us here. Project 2028 will get us out of here.
Thanks for your thoughts.

(24,744 posts)County voted Trump. Voted Republican in every presidential election since 1976, when the county voted Carter.
In their county races, they voted Republican in every contested election in 2024
They did vote for Josh Stein for Governor. So, that's a checkmark in the good column

(7,132 posts)I am like you... no business showing up to volunteer in a disaster zone. I've got to put my wallet where my heart is....
We have a fairly good sized charity locally that specializes in shipping and logistical support for other charities all over the world. They recently donated funds to a small biker dude group in South Carolina that love Harleys and BBQ. This little group used a lot of their own money but also pulled in sponsorship from various regional Harley dealers and grocery chains to buy and stock a food trailer, but they needed to get the right driver training and certification, plus a reliable truck to pull the food trailer. This charity in Ohio came up with the funds.
Another idea is look for charities that help support the first responders that do show up... for instance the Coast Guard has one, as do the unions who back police, fire, and medical personnel. There's even charities that help public schools to rebuild or to support families using the school as a shelter.
I know these are all oddball ideas, I'm just tossing them out there for DU generally.

(1,773 posts)The water treatment plant for Mebane was 6' under water. Businesses closed down, with no fresh water. Citizens were told not to use any water. They were just catching up with getting the water plant truly handling the water and now this. Businesses have been stepping up in nearby towns, offering a place for business folks to sell. Some offering places to get water.

(1,616 posts)We have rivers, creeks, lakes and ponds all over. It's why it's such a good place to grow stuff. But we also don't have a lot of infrastructure to handle things like this. We're on a well, so our water is okay, but too much rain can mess up septic systems.
We lost power about 6 pm last night and my son went out to get us something to eat since the power was not supposed to be restored until after 9 pm. He said he had to divert around a lot of closed roads, the low-lying areas were flooded.
Torrential rains, day after day, is not normal here. Anyone who claims the climate isn't changing, for the worse, is crazy. I grew up here, lived here most of my life, outside of the time I was in the USAF and about a year afterward. We seldom got snow, rained at night, reasonable amounts. Not terribly hot, or humid. Nothing like we have today. And every year it's worse and worse.
I appreciate everyone's concern, I never thought my little part of the world would ever be mentioned here. I wish the people were smart enough to vote for Dems, but the ignorance is strong, as it is everywhere else. We definitely need to work on education and critical thinking for all Americans.

(1,616 posts)We never used to have weather like this, only if a hurricane came through, and that wasn't for days and days on end. About 30 years ago, when we moved onto this land, it rained basically five out of seven days, every week, and it's getting worse. I used to joke that if I wanted to live where it rained all the time, I'd move to Oregon.
It's ridiculous how the weather is now. It's not normal, no matter how much people try to tell you it is how it's always been. And with government cuts, there won't be enough people or services to take care of the fallout. Our water treatment facilities here aren't new, and there is more pressure on the systems due to so many more people living here now.
