The decision by Mr. Cuomo, who had been questioning whether to run after his crushing Democratic primary defeat by Mr. Mamdani, a state assemblyman and a democratic socialist, will be announced in a video that is expected to be released this week, according to three people familiar with his decision.
If the polls show that he is not the highest-ranked challenger to Mr. Mamdani by early September, he will pledge to drop out of the race, the people said. He will encourage the other challengers Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent; Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee; and Jim Walden, an independent to do the same. (The plan was hatched by Mr. Walden.)

(28,257 posts)Keep in mind that NY is using ranked-choice voting.
Take the most recent poll showing Mamdani ahead by double digits... but with only 35% of the vote... then Cuomo with 25%... then Silwa and Adams with 14% and 11% respectively. We have no idea where the undecideds will end up in the end... but if you drop Adams' 11%... it's highly unlikely that many of those voters would have Mamdani as their second choice. So then it comes down to where the Silwa voters ranked the remaining two candidates.

(5,196 posts)Ranked choice isn't used in the general election. Cuomo is polling at 24%, Mamdani at 40%. Cuomo can't win.

(4,497 posts)Mamdanis positions should be the basic Democratic platform. They pretty much used to be. We need to get back to our staunchly pro-labor days and jettison these corporate scumbags and oligarchs.

(126,085 posts)Mamdani trounced him once; it's clear that Mamdani is popular with NY voters, and that sleazy sex pest Cuomo isn't. I think he hopes ranked-choice voting will give him a chance by aggregating the votes for other candidates to him, but considering who the other candidates are (Eric Adams? Curtis Sliwa?) I don't think it will happen.

(480 posts)Adams isnt popular right now (I guess cozying up to Trump kept him out of jail but is likely to lose him his job), and Silwa appears to be a spoiler for Adams. Its kinda funny.
These three (Adams, Cuomo, and Silwa) have giant egos and are completely splitting the anti-Mamdani vote. Mamdani is running a very impressive campaign right now. I think even Cuomo acknowledged that. I dont see Cuomo winning, unless Adams drops out and maybe endorses him, though I wonder how much good an Adams endorsement would do him at this point.

(10,800 posts)I don't think Sliwa, Adams or Cuomo will get out of each other's way so 40 to 45% should be plenty for Mandami. But I'm not a New Yorker so I'm just guessing.
fujiyamasan
(480 posts)I think Adams making nice with Trump was a step too far for New York dems. Theyre mostly going to be split between Cuomo and Mamdani, since theres a significant faction of moderate dems in the city that are likely turned off by the socialist tag and his stance on Israel.
Cuomo is going to get a lot from moneyed interests, like real estate and AIPAC.

(8,000 posts)Then the anti-Mamdani vote will be split x number of ways and Mamdani will win.

(20,081 posts)Does NYC have ranked choice for the general in November?
If no candidate gets 50% does it force a runoff?
SocialDemocrat61
(5,196 posts)RCV is only used in primaries, not in the general election.
