A friend of mine follows a UK blogger. This Brit posted that she ran into a spot of bother recently trying to enter US. She has her own YouTube channel with scores of thousands of subscribers. Immigration looked through her devices and came across her channel. A number of her viewers, not her, had posted negative comments about the state of affairs in US. The Brit was banned on the spot from entering US for 5 years!

Well, I have to apologize. I got this story from my friend's husband and he confused two stories. It involved a couple from Ontario, and she is trying to find the details for me. I'll post that story here, with sources, when/if she's able to find it.
However, as I mentioned in a reply below to Shellback Squid, these bans are increasingly common. Here's another article, also from 2019, from MLT AIKINS. "5-year Travel Bans: An Increasing Concern for Canadians Travelling to the U.S. for Work or Pleasure"
https://www.mltaikins.com/insights/5-year-travel-bans-an-increasing-concern-for-canadians/
And here is a March 28, 2025 story from CityNews Everywhere. "Trumps stronger stance on border security leads to trouble for Canadians driving into the U.S."
...
It seems like the pendulum has swung a lot from low enforcement under the Biden administration to almost going on steroids here for the Trump administration, Saunders told 1130 NewsRadio.
He thinks this could become a trend for the next four years, and were only two months into the Trump administration.
...
You hear story after story. You hear about the students who are being put in detention and deported on student visas. Youre hearing about all of these detentions, whether its British citizens, Canadian citizens, so yes, youre hearing more, Saunders explained.

(107 posts)This story was posted back in September 25, 2019 on The Northern Light Blaine and Birch Bay's Community Newletter, so the situation is not all that new.
Five-year bans, formally called expedited removals, used to be issued in cases of egregious conduct such as lying to a border guard or being caught working in the U.S. illegally. But immigration lawyers say that the bans are now being issued more liberally, including when visitors lack the right documents or are simply unaware of the rules.
Im getting tons of cases where people come to the border and dont have the right documents or they are naïve in what they are doing, and they get five-year bars, said Blaine immigration lawyer Len Saunders, who noted a case in which a Canadian professional was banned from the U.S. for having a notarized, rather than an original, copy of his college degree.
...
In 20 years, Ive never seen so many expedited removals, said Saunders. Its like theyre giving out speeding tickets at the border. Instead of being denied entry, theyre giving five-year bans to Canadians. Its happening in all of the ports under the Seattle Field Office. Its happening in Blaine, at the truck crossing, in Point Roberts, in Montana, all across the district. Ive been told that there is a new sheriff in town. He added that he had been contacted by a number of Canadian TV and radio newsrooms seeking insight into the new development.

I didn't see the questions until after midnight last night, when it was too late to get more information, but I posted my intention to do so. This morning, I added some general information shortly after eight and again said I would email the friend and get the info in about an hour. And in less than an hour I edited my original post with an apology and some facts. I'm still waiting for more info which depends on my friend being able to find the story. She is going to try.
