General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsPlease people if someone asks you "What is a woman" the answer is a person who identifies
as a woman. That is it. Physicality doesn't matter and you can remind people that plenty of women undergo hysterectomies and lose their breasts because of cancer or the knowledge that they will eventually get cancer.
A trans woman I know wrote her story online and she told how one day when she was very young she heard her father saying, "We need to do something about that boy and they way he acts so feminine" She had 3 other brothers and she remembers thinking, "I wonder which of my brothers he is talking about?
Why did she think he was talking about one of her brothers? Because she was a girl so it couldn't be her! Her identity was of a girl. It never occurred to her that she had been labelled a boy, although she would find out later in life. And that is when the suffering started

(1,634 posts)...and mostly irrelevant. Gender is not sex. Even sex is not a "hard biological truth."
The post is about women, not "females."

(1,634 posts)...but the original post was about women (and I suppose men), not what constitutes markers of sex.
But to the chromosome chat, I suggest that other factors play in, like hormones, the interplay of chromosomes and hormones on the body's development, and so on. My chromosomes might be XX, although I've never had them tested, but I guarantee you would not think I belong in the women's restroom.
Anyway, if the Trumpists get their way, presumed chromosomal sex will be the determiner, so to me that's reason alone to look for a more nuanced perspective.
They really seem obsessed with the topic, when really one's chromosomes don't really impact daily life much at all, for the vast majority of people anyway.

(4,082 posts)I just tried to open the article and got a page about "Already got a subscription?". That's the first time I have seen that. I've shared the link with others on several occasions and neither I nor they got that page. Maybe you can find it in a library.

Not our business.
Also I do not think this is the issue we should be addressing.
We should be asking why did we let PutinTrumpGOP steal the election and how did they do it.
This is the only issue we should be addressing.
The rest is BS.
Don't fall for it.

(7,113 posts)I could hunt and fish better than any male in the family and could handle a team better than them too... in a Sunday dress even. I was so fortunate to grow up in a family that encouraged us kids to just be who we are. Everyone deserves that.
Recently encountered a younger who told me they were "they, them" and I tripped over it quite a lot. I was lucky they gave me grace due to being 80 something and trying hard. There will be as next time and hopefully it is easier.
People should be free to just be who they are as long as they aren't mean hateful garbage heads.
