and had to accept a position as the Hortmans' house dog. The Hortmans became involved with Helping Paws, an organization that helps find service animals for people with disabilities, veterans and first responders, as part of their daughter Sophie’s service project during her senior year in high school. https://www.startribune.com/melissa-hortman-dog-gilbert-shooting-mark-hortman-minnesota/601374091

For the monsters that kill such sweet animals. Dogs especially, know only love and commitment. I once had a sweet pie Labrador like Gilbert that i adopted from the asylum. When he took a nap in the garden, the chickens came to sit on and up him and when we fed the rabbits, they always huddled around his massive paws (He was one huge strong chunk of dog.) But when during a particular dark moment in my life I decided to take my own life, he decided no and pulled me out of the bath without even breaking skin and laid next to me until I regained consciousness. First thing I saw when I opened my eyes where his own warm brown eyes staring at me and his big wet nose against mine. He saved me twice as it als gave me strength never to reconsider such act. Dogs are truly angels, so may that f###er burn for all eternity!
