Trump administration ends temporary protected status for thousands of Afghans
The Department of Homeland Secretary will not renew temporary protections for thousands of Afghans in the U.S. setting them up for potential deportation starting on May 20.
Over 9,000 people from Afghanistan were covered by TPS as of September 2024. The Biden administration first designated people fleeing Afghanistan as eligible for TPS in 2022 in response to turmoil in the country under Taliban rule, which began after the withdrawal of U.S. troops a year earlier. In 2023, the Biden administration extended TPS for Afghans, noting that the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan remained too dangerous for them to return to the country.
Tens of thousands of Afghans became targets of the Taliban by working for the U.S. government during America's war in Afghanistan, the longest in U.S. history. Over the years, Afghans who helped aid the U.S. war effort and their families have been primarily able to resettle in the U.S. through the Special Immigrant Visa program and the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. But there are a number of Afghans who are still in process of obtaining their SIV status and TPS offered them a layer of stability, according to Andrew Sullivan, the executive director of No One Left Behind, which works to support SIV recipients.

Afghan Christians ordered to self-deport by Good Friday:

...remember all of the Trump supporters attacking Pres. Biden and VP Harris because there were some Afghans left behind in the withdrawal who were said to be at the mercy of the Taliban? It was literally their only coherent argument, albeit a bullshit criticism of the largest airlift in U.S. history.
Now this order not only puts the ones we managed to rescue back in the hands of their mortal enemies, but makes moot to efforts of anyone else already in the process getting permission to come to America.
Trump is not only deliberately hurting these people, he's delivering them to enemies of this very nation to be imprisoned, tortured, exploited, and slaughtered. All by the very same terrorists he spent the entire campaign, and interim before becoming president, the mortal enemy he claimed Joe Biden hadn't protected Afghans against.
And, these are 'Christian' refugees?
This abandonment of refugees who've found a place in this country isn't just cruelty, and it is certainly unforgivably cruel. These are the acts of a madman; a monster.
Donald Trump is criminally insane, and the nation is watching him pick off his victims with baited breath as if we're expecting there's to be some bottom to this depravity before we scream.
But this is a horror that is beyond sad. It's an abomination of humanity, and it's being done with our acquiescence. Every time he hurts someone, and he deliberately reaches out and hurts someone each and every day, our own humanity is compromised, maybe irreparably damaged along with his increasingly decrepit own.
We don't come out of this with clean hands, even as much as we care about these things enough to speak out and protest. These vile acts weigh on ALL of us; we purveyors of democracy who regularly measure our own world relationships by demanding others' adhere to accountable precepts of human rights, due process of law, and justice.
We should hear the screams and cries in our sleep of these people our nation's president is abandoning to fates our country once considered the very definition of our own superior morality at the time to rescued them from; as if all of the valor and sacrifice of our troops in fighting to protect them and bring them here was just some kind of perverse game.
We've already learned not to celebrate our Statue of Liberty too loudly and proudly; not just because openly celebrating our 'nation of immigrants' has become a major source of political attack and derision, but because, there's no truth behind it anymore.
And as republicans and Trump burn these fields of gold behind them, even the communities we established decades ago are being deliberately torn asunder by this megalomaniac murderer in the WH, making a lie of even our past.
It's just murder. Plain and simple murder.
The famous words of Emma Lazarus on the pedestal of the Statute of Liberty read: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." Until 1921 this was an accurate picture of our society. Under present law it would be appropriate to add: "as long as they come from Northern Europe, are not too tired or too poor or slightly ill, never stole a loaf of bread, never joined any questionable organization, and can document their activities from the past two years.

(20,848 posts)to this heinous action by this monstrosity in the WH.
It's on him, and his minions.
But we are between a rock and a hard place. I hope for a great, continued peaceful, and bigger turn out tomorrow. Yet certain actions beyond that may trigger this Martial Law action I'm pretty sure drumphf is itching to take. Then what?
I also would salute people who might engage in non-violent disobedience in the near future. I'm speculateing, have not heard anything, nor do I know any people thinking that.
Very Brave people who might go ahead in the future with that kind of activism in this potentiallly unstable atmosphere.
