Every other photo from that hell-hole doesn't look like people enjoying drinks.

(1,090 posts)...like any other authoritarian crazy. All of these types are of the same stripe: smug trolls of limited intellect.

(54,991 posts)Theresienstadt was a nazi concentration camp in what is now the Czech republic.
It was a way station to Auschwitz, but it was used as propaganda at times, as they would temporarily make it look almost nice and then allow outside observers in so they could give the false impression that their victims were being treated well.
Good on van hollen for making contact with the prisoner, but shame on him for allowing a propaganda photo to be taken.

(1,090 posts)...is in all tens. How much control do you think the senator had? HIs objective was to see and speak with his constituent, and to provide to his family proof of life and an idea of his condition. Let's understand who's actually responsible for the propaganda and not spit on Van Hollen for his focus on the more important thing, and for something that was truly out of his hands.

(54,991 posts)i acknowledged that there was an upside and commended him for that.
nor did i ever suggest that the staging of the meet was entirely in his hands.
but it's clear from the photo that he agreed to let it happen, and he could have prevented it. politicians are supposed to be keenly aware of such things. i don't know the circumstance, but i rather suspect he could have established that he was alive and had a brief conversation with him without making it look like he was being treated like a guest in a decent hotel.

(2,805 posts)for allowing a propaganda photo to be taken"?? What the heck! Should he have demanded they shave his head and dress him in rags before they met, or else he'd refuse to meet with him at all? Come on!

(54,991 posts)i've already seen right-wing posts elsewhere talking about how the left was hyperventilating about the whole situation and if he was even alive, when he is not only alive but being treated quite well and drinking margaritas.
it's vital that america knows the true conditions there, and oddly we learned more from a kristi noem photo-op than from van hollen's.
