FSU shooter is white supremacist

Florida State University shooter Phoenix Ikner touted vile white supremacist views that raised serious concerns among his classmates — including that “Rosa Parks was in the wrong” and that black people were destroying his community.

Ikner, who allegedly killed two people and wounded six others when he opened fire on campus Thursday, horrified other students with his “gross” racial rhetoric.

McNeil added that the 20-year-old suspect was also a "long-standing member" of the Leon County Sheriff's Office's Youth Advisory Council.

Pheonix had been "steeped in the Leon County Sheriff's Office family," McNeil said, adding, "It's not a surprise to us that he had access to weapons," he added.

His views were known back when he was a high school student and many in his orbit found him "creepy" and "disturbing."

Keep in mind that Tallahassee is very much a college town. It is home to Florida State University, Florida A&M, and Tallahassee State College.

No, it isn't shocking that a sheriff's deputy's kid would have white supremacist and pro-Trump views. But the area he group up in is way more left-leaning than right.

that is a pretty low bar. Many Southerners see their primary -- all too often -- only connection with universities as being affiliated with a football team, and an awesomely god-like coach. Ask them about their years spent in college and they'll describe pep rallies and championships won or lost. If you remember to ask them, they may mention what degree they sought there.

50-year resident of Tallahassee here...

Its only "blue" because of a large African American population(33%) and the Universities/Medical centers. The two counties that bookend Leon are 50% plus AA as well. Outside that, this is just like any other "flyover" area of north Florida with Trump flags and yahoos. Rival college sports fans call us "Trailerhassee". The city just has an unusual demographic. Its not really "blue" like other areas in "blue states" may be.

The fact that it is because of the AA population and the universities doesn't matter. They break Democratic in an area otherwise solidly red.

Being a college town.

Outside of Tallahassee and I believe one or two black majority counties, that's a fair assessment for most of the Panhandle.

I want the whole story. Was he on psychiatric meds? For how long? Were there red flags in the past? Did he go to public or private school? What was his upbringing like?

The trouble with the news is that it tends to give people the information they want, but they don't want good information.

I don't see him only as the role he chose to play, possibly after he was warped or just plain broken by our dumb society. I want the context. Is this guy's brokenness the same as shooters of other supposed "ideologies?" Is there just one root "shooter" ideology that results in flags and manifestos?

Do you not see Trump "only as the role he chose to play?" Do you need to understand his background and why he is broken? Trump's political career is "the role he chose to play, possibly after he was warped or just plain broken."

White nationalism is a political movement, a social phenomenon. It encourages violence and hate crimes. Focusing on the individual actor obscures that fact and is misleading.

To be extremely clear, TSC-PD is NOT a right-wing organization. Far from it. This group is largely comprised of serious students of political science and international relations participating on a forum to discuss politics. I'm personally acquainted with one of the members.

They found him disturbing and immediately reported him as a white supremacist who openly espoused far-right views when introducing himself in classes. He has not been an active participant in their discussion lately, but most of the members were familiar with him, some having had classes with him.

I received information from my daughter yesterday who is friends with one of his high school classmates at Lincoln High in Tallahassee. He wore his extremist pro-Trump views on his sleeves (and apparently his head) in high school as well.

Leon county/Tallahassee is a relatively blue dot in a sea of red in Florida.

I really wish the media would lead with this. It absolutely is the motivating factor for his horrifying actions yesterday.

When I heard he was a white supremacist. In my experience the two go hand in hand.
Often people that are misogynistic, xenophobic, bigoted or racist are also plagued with mental health issues.
The hate and anger these people bottle up in themselves is like building the foundation of your mental stability in loss sand.
