How Pissed is Trump at El Salvador's Nayib Bukele this Morning?

He will view Chris Van Hollen's being allowed to meet with detainee Kilmer Garcia as defiance or a personal slight.

Not sure who would do the prosecuting… or for what… or why letting Garcia speak to someone (but not release him) would put off such a move.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutes crimes against humanity, genocide and war crimes. Bukele likely realized his actions could have long-term consequences, and Trump won't be around forever to protect him.

An American administration that actually believes in the rule of law and liberal democracy, will ensure authoritarian fascists like Bukele, and others like him, who think that this is some kind of permanent shift toward American fascism, and not the ravings of an insane cult, WILL NEVER KNOW A SINGLE MOMENT OF PEACE.

He will have to flee from one hellish hidey-hole to another, like Sadam Hussain, or Ghadafi.

If he's lucky, he'll chew on a Luger, like Hitler, before he gets sent to the general population of his own death prison.

First - there were plenty of authoritarian governments during the last several democratic administrations. Kicking Trump out isn’t suddenly going to turn the US into some regime-overthrowing champion. We’ll be busy enough putting things back to rights here at home.

More importantly… why would letting a senator speak to a particular prisoner undo all of that?

America didn't kiss those authoritarian leaders and countries asses.

We never "aspired" to become them.

America has had its share of problems, and has often failed to live up to the values we champion, but we have never collectively, failed to champion them.

We don't really need to "overthrow" authoritarian regimes...we need to stop emulating them. Getting rid of Donnie Dipshit WILL solve a shit-ton of problems.

I am specifically referring to leaders and countries that are "actively" taking legal American residents, and potentially American citizens, and placing them in death prisons. Those "leaders" should NEVER assume that they will have a moments peace.

That's quite different than having a trade agreement with a place like Saudi Arabia, or China.

Neither China, nor Saudi Arabia are making deals with Donnie Dipshit to imprison American residents in death camps.

Please tell me you understand the difference?

The story was not developing in the way they hoped. They kept feeding people the line about Garcia being MS13 but even the old conservatives in Grassley's town hall were not buying it and ripping him one about it. That one old white guy was awesome and I think he hit a nerve with everyone who saw it. This whole operation is not really landing the way they anticipated.

At least in part for the optics with Garcia wearing a nice shirt in a nice cafeteria setting with a stemware glass for his water.

The administration remains determined to keep him there, as their rhetoric to that intent has only escalated. They won't give an inch in their determination to excerise their power to throw anyone into a foreign gulag without due process of law.

They WANT it to be an unaccountable torture prison - this is the point of the Noem visuals and the various idiots standing in front of the cells. But then they are also like "Oh, he looks healthy and not at all tortured, haha!" Which is it?

Anyway, if he's being repatriated, he should be processed and released. If he's being produced back for an immigration hearing, he should be processed and sent back. He's not been convicted of anything, so there are no grounds to hold him, whether it's a torture prison or an old folks home.

Free people don't tolerate indefinite, unaccountable detention.

As a country, they haven't been able to climb out of the hole United Fruit, parochial anti-Communist Church leaders, and the CIA dug for them in the early-mid 20th century yet.

The corruption in El Salvador has been going on for over 100 years, and the regular people - small indigenous businessmen and peasant farmers, have never been able to have even basic rights, let alone full representation in the government due to their ingrained patron culture.

Trump is learning something you would have expected a career criminal to learn decades ago. If you do business with criminals, they are likely to take advantage of you. Bukele is a dirt bag, but he knows Trump can’t fire him and will keep sending prisoners, so why not make nice with the Democrat for when Trump is gone?

Even some ardent supporters of deportation are not on board with this. They don't mind families ripped apart and people deported but there is a stench about sending people to prison indefinitely without due process - Especially in this case where the government admitted to making a mistake.
