Senators aren't allowed to see him, the DOJ risks contempt, El Salvador says they won't ever return him. I strongly suspect this is the secret they're hiding.

It is very telling that we even have to ask this question and can consider it entirely plausible that our government might be using El Salvador as an offshore extermination camp.

I will say that it's also plausible that he's still alive, and this administration is simply being as aggressively obstinate as possible, that that is their basic m.o.

So, on the one hand, who knows. On the other hand, why the grill are we putting up with a dictator who makes us question this?
