(34,757 posts)Hegseth *must* be go. His actions (that we know about) are already too reckless to move forward. There's too much at stake.

(30,310 posts)Give me just a short time to be pathetically grateful for somebody in Democratic leadership, directing some forceful language in trump's direction. Call it wish fulfillment.

Autumn
(47,774 posts)he will not resign, he will not be fired. He is a member of Trumps cabinet and Republicans will die to protect Trumps people. What Musk is doing is illegal. There is where the focus should be and making sure every Democrat is screaming what they are doing from the rooftops.

IMO too few are doing that.

(13,854 posts)Jeffries should have also referenced Hegseths deceit regarding the text chain after it was disclosed, emphasizing that hes broken the basic trust with the American people on which his position depends.

(480 posts)Direct and to the point. The letter was addressed to the potus after all. There will be plenty of letters, memos, reports, talk show interviews that can include all the sordid details. Letting it unwind at a slower pace so it gains legs being talked about, with new revelations daily.

(33,750 posts)I'm numb to it all. Saw my Congressman last night with a virtual town hall, I feel for him and for all the people trying to get an honest, truthful understanding of what's going on, but other than that...nothing. I'll go to the April 5th protest, make my little sign, and wait for next. Enjoy the hell out of every aspect of my life where I can find joy. Fuck it.

Excerpt:
What I will say, in order to illustrate the shocking recklessness of this Signal conversation, is that the Hegseth post contained operational details of forthcoming strikes on Yemen, including information about targets, weapons the U.S. would be deploying, and attack sequencing, Goldberg wrote, disclosing he left the conversation at that point.
Do I wish it hadnt happened? Of course, Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) said. Do they wish it hadnt happened? Of course. But this is not keeping the American people up at night.
Obviously, a mistake was made, he added. But mistakes happen, and this is, trust me, this is not going to lead to the apocalypse, OK?

Congressional Democrats on Monday called for investigations over the leak of highly sensitive military plans involving top Cabinet officials and the editor in chief of The Atlantic. ... While the White House admitted that officials had made a mistake in adding Goldberg to the chat, Democrats in Congress argued that the acknowledgment isnt enough and that the error must be investigated.
The leak of sensitive national security information by the Trump administration on a non-classified system is completely outrageous and shocks the conscience, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement. It is yet another unprecedented example that our nation is increasingly more dangerous because of the elevation of reckless and mediocre individuals, including the Secretary of Defense.
The New York Democrat added, If House Republicans are truly serious about keeping America safe, and not simply being sycophants and enablers, they must join Democrats in a swift, serious and substantive investigation into this unacceptable and irresponsible national security breach.
Around the same time, on the other side of Capitol Hill, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer delivered floor remarks in which the New York Democrat said, This debacle requires a full investigation into how this happened, the damage it created, and how we can avoid it in the future. If our nations military secrets are being peddled around over unsecure text chains, we need to know at once and we need to put a stop to it immediately. Every single Senator Republican and Democrat and Independent must demand accountability......
The next question, of course, is what theyll do next.
Because Democrats are in the minority, they cant call committee hearings or send subpoenas to the Trump administration. That said, members can launch investigations several Democrats have already indicated their examinations are already underway and issue reports.
They can also ask good questions during congressional hearings, including a Senate hearing thats poised to begin with testimony from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe.
Finally, they can at least try to organize unofficial hearings. Only one word for this: FUBAR, Democratic Rep. Pat Ryan of New York, an Army veteran who sits on the Armed Services Committee, wrote online. If House Republicans wont hold a hearing on how this happened IMMEDIATELY, Ill do it my damn self.

(3,282 posts)"... and likely violated the law." WTF does that even mean? Either they broke the law or they didn't! Don't give them any gray area to start wriggling out of accountability. This will drag out until the next fuck-up and it will be forgotten with, once again, no consequences.

(3,282 posts)TSF would have to admit he made a mistake. TSF will never admit he made a mistake. According to him he never makes mistakes. So, Sec Def Pete will carry on getting paid to be a drunken blabbermouth doofus by the American taxpayers.
