Nazi flag found on Bay Area freeway overpass triggers hate crime probe
The Santa Clara County Sheriffs Office confirmed to SFGATE in an email that deputies responded at about 3:23 p.m. to reports of a flag attached to an overpass fence along Burnett Avenue in Morgan Hill. Deputies removed the flag shortly after arriving and launched an investigation into the discovery as a possible hate crime, according to Brooks Jarosz, a spokesperson for the sheriffs office.
A person was identified and interviewed in connection to the flag display, Jarosz wrote, but has not been arrested or charged with a crime as the case remains under review by the Santa Clara County District Attorneys Office.
These cases are complex and require careful consideration to distinguish between free speech and a targeted hate crime, Jarosz wrote.
In a statement posted to Facebook, Morgan Hill Mayor Mark Turner acknowledged the strong reactions sparked by the disturbing act of a Nazi flag being hung on the bridge over the freeway as well as a reported assault against a Muslim man earlier this month that is also being investigated as a hate crime. Turner urged residents to keep the events in perspective.
While these actions are indeed unacceptable and hurtful, Turner said, they do not define our town or the values we hold dear.
