Story by Mandy Taheri
Lewelyn Dixon, a green card holder who immigrated to the United States from the Philippines five decades ago, is being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Washington state, her niece Emily Cristobal told Newsweek via email on Saturday.
Trump has said that most detentions and deportations would target individuals with criminal records. However, in recent weeks, there have been multiple reports of people with valid documentation and no criminal convictions being detained for deportation.
What To Know
Cristobal told Newsweek that her 64-year-old aunt, who she calls "Aunty Lyn," was "first detained by Customs Border Patrol on February 28 and was being held at SEA-TAC [Seattle-Tacoma International] airport." She was returning from a trip to the Philippines. Dixon immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines when she was 14.
On March 2, Dixon was "transferred to the Northwest ICE Detention Facility." The Northwest ICE Processing Center (NWIPC), which is privately owned by the GEO Group, holds over 1,500 detainees, and has been open since 2004.
A spokesperson for University of Washington Medicine told Newsweek: "We can confirm that Lewelyn Dixon is currently employed by the University of Washington. We do not have further detailed information at this time."
Cristobal said Dixon's earliest scheduled hearing is set for July 17 at 2:30 p.m.

(1,324 posts)If you're a green card holder -- no matter how long you've been in this country -- you can never travel out of the United States or you may be imprisoned by ICE! How terrifying is that!?!

(243 posts)My parents brought me here from Canada when I was an infant. I have legal permanent resident status and a valid green card. But I am scared shitless for when that lunatic starts deporting Canadians. I have lurked here for some time and made a few comments here and there. But I have to stop now and scrub all my negative mentions of Trump that I can find (and there are many) because they are checking social media of anyone they want to deport.
Bye bye y'all. It's been fun.

(7,775 posts)It's very easy to "disappear" people into these facilities; they don't have anywhere near the oversight, or transparency of a public facility.
I imagine we'll see a lot more of these springing up as the Trump government expands it's attack on America.
Besides law abiding green card holders, naturalized US citizens, and even birthright citizens will get put in them as a means of terrorizing the population.
Of course, the overwhelming majority of them will be black, brown, or yellow race, plus some white liberals who simply pissed Trump, or one of his lieutenants off.
Every day we get closer to being a fascist dictatorship.

(94,928 posts)Don't want certain kinds of immigrants at all - documented or undocumented. Legal or otherwise.
Wants to harass people from countries Trump is angry with. (Canada, Germany, etc..)
Wants to deport those protected under Biden with humanitarian parole (Haitians, Venezuelans, etc..) - to include those ungrateful Ukrainians that don't understand they need to bow down to Trump and do as he says because Putin is being just so generous.
Invites those poor put-upon white people from South Africa who miss apartheid.
Nah. Nothing to read into any of that. Nothing at all. Nothing to see here.
