Gym Jordan wants Trump to move the Olympics from LA to a Red State.

I do not think that is legal; I thought Olympics are awarded to cities and not countries.
Congress should help the people of California and stop playing politics.

Not at all surprised this is the first reply. It instantly popped in my mind, that will be a lot of damn showers, with so many flavors of genitalia for him to view.

(45,887 posts)Spoiler alert: A lot of cities that host Olympic games incur a lot of debt to do so, and dont always bring in enough revenue to cover that debt.

(72,192 posts)has done well. youth sports there r endowed for the foreseeable future w money from past olympics.
it comes down to having existing facilities for big events. if u have to build it all from scratch, its bad.
wasnt always that way, but its gotten worse every time for a while. iirc lake placid was the start of that.
i rly wanted chgo to get it the year it went to rio. we had a great plan, and what was going to b built was going to remain to b used by us. but btn the lake, the sports teams and all the us here, there was little to build.

(24,041 posts)If LA should decide not to host the Olympics, I think the IOC would have to find a new location. If it was up to Trump, he'd probably move it to Crimea, just to be annoying.

(104,386 posts)There's no way in hell that Dallas or Miami has the infrastructure that's needed or required to hold the Olympics in the first place. And a lot of our venues are either new or undergoing renovation. LAX is making major renovations to handle the traffic that's required to support the Olympics. 7 months is totally fucking insane. He's just doing this to win favor points from Trump and his employer, Fox News.

(4,524 posts)If a true catastrophe (such as a devastating earthquake) happened that jeopardized a city's ability to host the Olympics as scheduled, then I'm not sure what the IOC would do. But fires in LA, 3 1/2 years ahead of the games in no way jeopardizes the Olympics.

Gym Jordan is out of his gourd. Perhaps he should have focused on his Alma Mater playing in the National NCAA Title Game against Notre Dame on the 20th.

(4,524 posts)such as Dallas, are all BLUE cities in Red States.
Mexico City was in mid to late October. If it wasn't for the fact that NBC would freak out because it'd be during football season (and veto it), Dallas or Houston could probably hold a Summer games some day. But because the US TV Networks have too much invested in the NFL, any US summer games would be June-August.
That basically takes out any southern city.

(32,761 posts)The elevation of Mexico City ranges from 7,350 ft-12,890 ft
The average highs/lows are
July 76/55
Aug 76/56
Sept 75/56
Mexico City has a subtropical highland climate (Köppen climate classification Cwb), due to its tropical location but high elevation. The lower region of the valley receives less rainfall than the upper regions of the south; the lower boroughs of Iztapalapa, Iztacalco, Venustiano Carranza and the east portion of Gustavo A. Madero are usually drier and warmer than the upper southern boroughs of Tlalpan and Milpa Alta, a mountainous region of pine and oak trees known as the range of Ajusco. The average annual temperature varies from 12 to 16 °C (54 to 61 °F), depending on the altitude of the borough. The temperature is rarely below 3 °C (37 °F) or above 30 °C (86 °F).[98] At the Tacubaya observatory, the lowest temperature ever registered was −4.4 °C (24 °F) on 13 February 1960, and the highest temperature on record was 34.7 °C (94.5 °F) on 25 May 2024.[99] Overall precipitation is heavily concentrated in the summer months, and includes dense hail.
Snow falls in the city scarcely, although somewhat more often on nearby mountaintops. Throughout its history, the Central Valley of Mexico was accustomed to having several snowfalls per decade (including a period between 1878 and 1895 in which every single yearexcept 1880recorded snowfalls[100]), mostly lake-effect snow. The effects of the draining of Lake Texcoco and global warming have greatly reduced snowfalls after the snow flurries of 12 February 1907.[101] Since 1908, snow has only fallen three times, snow on 14 February 1920;[102] snow flurries on 14 March 1940;[103] and on 12 January 1967, when 8 centimeters (3 in) of snow fell on the city, the most on record.[104] The 1967 snowstorm coincided with the operation of Deep Drainage System that resulted in the total draining of what was left of Lake Texcoco.[100][105] After the disappearance of Lake Texcoco, snow has never fallen again over Mexico City.[100]

(994 posts)Only....they'd never happen in October which takes out most southern cities. I suppose maybe they could hold them in late May/early June, but that would be awfully early (and even then the temperatures might be too much). Anything from mid-June through mid-September would be too hot for any of the outdoor stuff. Even if you held just about everything in the evening/night hours (impracticable) it'd be at the boundary of being too hot for many events.

(994 posts)And it's usually pretty comfortable. You'll never get rid of the chance for hot weather of course, but it's typically upper 70s to low 80s for a high. That's pretty perfect for a Summer games to be honest. Tokyo was hotter than that (Paris was too I think).

(6,914 posts)Just when you think they can't dig any further in the hole of stupidity, they find another shovel.
There isn't a single city in the USA that can get ready in three years and it will put them heavily into debt.
In LA, the biggest hurdle is trying to decide which stadium or venue and for what sport. Add to that, the city is using this opportunity to increase and advance its public transportation options. LA is also one of the few cities that has hosted the Olympics and made money.

(20,082 posts)There are people of both parties in every state. The economy of one state does not deserve to suffer because of its voters. And if the Olympics needs to be moved because of the fires that's one thing, but it should not be moved on the basis of American politics.

(4,524 posts)Only 2 US cities have bid for the Summer Olympics and failed in the past 50 years
New York City 2012
Chicago 2016
right wingers were even famously giddy when Chicago's bid failed because it was supported by President Obama.
US cities have hosted the Summer Olympics 4 times (LA in 2028 will be #5)
St. Louis 1904
LA 1932
LA 1984
Atlanta 1996
It should be obvious that only a handful of cities in the entire US are truly capable of hosting the Summer Olympics and almost all cities in the US would have no desire to.
