John Tyler
Millard Fillmore
Andrew Johnson
Chester Arthur
Theodore Roosevelt
Harry Truman
Lyndon Johnson
Richard Nixon
All were at half staff at their swearing in.
And no American will stand for it, just like No True Scotsman will . . . aren't logical fallacies wonderful?

And don't forget, this is not just an ignoramus we're talking about. It's a malignantly narcissistic ignoramus that thinks it is the center of the universe and personalizes every single frickin' thing that happens to it (or around it, or near it, or within its awareness).
Never forget: When it comes to the Orange Hellbeast, EVERYTHING is ALL about him, ALL of the damned time!

(10,443 posts)by inviting chinese communist leader Xi to his inauguration.
If any foreign leaders do show up at the inaugural ceremony, it would be unprecedented.
State Department records dating back to 1874, when the first visit by a foreign leader took place, show no head of a foreign country has ever attended a presidential inauguration in the U.S., though CBS notes its common for lower-ranking foreign diplomats or ambassadors to show up.
Foreign leaders arent typically invited to inaugurations due to the large crowds and security concerns, officials told the Associated Press in 2009, when Barack Obamas transition team declined to invite any heads of state to his inauguration, citing historical precedent.

I guess the GOP party leaders agree with this. Too bad the media just dropped this. I guess they cant be too critical of their paymasters hero.

(11,745 posts)Such an impossible invitation. Imagine him traveling so far away, his security detail would be huge. He would be standing within shooting range of GOP members who see him, and his form of communism, as the devil.
Imagine Xi having to listen to the unfiltered crap spewing forth from the pedophile. Could he remain stoic and not cringe?
What a stupid invitation but maybe pedo Trump was trying to pump up.his spectator numbers with Xi's security team.

(45,241 posts)There have been numerous instances of presidents being sworn in within 30 days of the death of previous president, including all of the instances of a VP being sworn in upon the death of a sitting president. The latter group of swearing in ceremonies aren't really the kind of event most people think of as an "inauguration ceremony" and its not clear whether an order directing the flying of flags at half staff was made before or after the swearing in all of those cases.
But in the case of Nixon's 1973 inauguration, flags had been ordered flown at half staff following the death of Truman a few weeks earlier and were still at half staff on inauguration day:https://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=AwrFQJTeRXxnRKAJHWeJzbkF;_ylu=c2VjA3NlYXJjaARzbGsDYnV0dG9u;_ylc=X1MDOTYwNjI4NTcEX3IDMgRmcgN5ZnAtdARmcjIDcDpzLHY6aSxtOnNiLXRvcARncHJpZAMxRlVQUXZ6eFJ0bVZFODEzNC53NmhBBG5fcnNsdAMwBG5fc3VnZwMwBG9yaWdpbgNpbWFnZXMuc2VhcmNoLnlhaG9vLmNvbQRwb3MDMARwcXN0cgMEcHFzdHJsAzAEcXN0cmwDMzYEcXVlcnkDbml4b24lMjBpbmF1Z3VyYXRpb24lMjAxOTczJTIwcGhvdG9zJTIwZmxhZ3MEdF9zdG1wAzE3MzYxOTc2NDk-?p=nixon+inauguration+1973+photos+flags&fr=yfp-t&fr2=p%3As%2Cv%3Ai%2Cm%3Asb-top&ei=UTF-8&x=wrt#id=44&iurl=https%3A%2F%2Fmedia.gettyimages.com%2Fid%2F517285048%2Fphoto%2F1-20-1973-washington-dc-president-richard-nixon-inauguration-general-view-of-swearing-in.jpg%3Fs%3D612x612%26w%3Dgi%26k%3D20%26c%3DT872GPryj0aMa7f-NJXLeS75ld1vMvTK5M4jO13BBl8%3D&action=click

(8,734 posts)The rule of flying flags at half staff for 30 days in honor of a deceased former president is part of the U.S. Flag Code, which was instituted by Eisenhower in 1954. Prior to that, there was no uniform flag code, so the actual practice may have varied quite a bit.
markpkessinger
(8,734 posts). . . is part of the U.S. Flag Code, which didn't exist prior to 1954, when Eisenhower signed it into law. So while you are certainly right about Johnson and Nixon, I'm not sure it was the case with Truman and the earlier presidents. Do you have a source that can confirm that?
markpkessinger
(8,734 posts). . . since he was sworn in aboard Air Force One and there was no formal inauguration per se (although there was in 1964, when he was elected to office).
markpkessinger
(8,734 posts). . . we really cannot just assume that it was done for the inaugurations of Tyler through Truman, because there was no flag code prior to 1954, when Eisenhower instituted it. And Johnson's swearing in happened on Air Force One, so there was no inauguration per se, except when he ran and won in 1964. As for Nixon, yes, one can readily verify that they were flown at half mast at his second inauguration in 1973 in honor of Truman's passing in December of 1972.
I tried to do some checking, but could find no source verifying that flags were at half staff for any of the earlier inaugurations.

(9,936 posts)I swear Jimmy picked the right time to go. Comparisons are being made between the goodness of him and the evilness of Trump over and over. And the fact that Trump will have his day ruined by the flags being flown half-mast is probably giving Jimmy a chuckle. Anyone else would not let it ruin their day but for someone as petty as Trump, it will really aggravate him.
