The agency sent us Rena.... and she was wonderful. In her 70's. She was a sergeant in the Jamaica army and then moved to the U.S. with her family. She owned a house in Jamaica and planned to move there when she retired. Lynn was going to be her last client and then she would retire.

Sundays were the best, when we would cook breakfast together. I would do the eggs, Rena would do bacon, sausage and grits.

After Lynn passed, we would have her over for supper or afternoon tea/coffee. She lived about 5 miles away in East Orange. She would also visit her mom in Brooklyn and sometimes stay there.

Then came covid. She went to stay with her mom. That was the last we heard from her. We tried finding what happened to her. The staff at her apartment building had no information. The nursing home agency had no contact after she retired. So we guess she was one of Covid's victims.

I think of her every Sunday morning, when I am frying eggs.

With the wind blowing across Lake Erie the air is bound to get more humid. Lately the cold has been kind of dry, but when the humidity kicks in you can feel it in your bones and it’s not pleasant. Thinking it’s going to be another erratic winter, just like the last 3 when most of the lake remained free of ice because of the wobbling jet stream. A direct result of climate change. With Lake Erie not freezing over, the threat of severe lake-effect snow remains high. When it ices over, the snow machine shuts down.

I've never been so cold as I was one winter afternoon in Chicago - it was barely below freezing but there was a humid wind coming off the lake and it cut to the bone. Humidity makes both heat and cold a lot worse. In a little while I'll bundle up and go for a pleasant walk in the dry cold. As they say in another cold place, Det finnes ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlig klær. (There is no bad weather, only bad clothing.)

Hopefully, it's enough to knock back the fire ants and other pests, too. We need a freeze for the peach crop, and lots of other plants around here need the cold to bloom/set fruit.
