I am so glad to see him receive the Medal of Freedom. I haven't seen him in awhile and his health has deteriorated and he can hardly walk. He is only 63 years old and was diagnosed with Parkinson's at the age of 29.

(17,505 posts)and I were about the diagnosis. It seemed unbelievable.
Either Fox himself or others connected it to his exposure to pesticides during the filming of "Casualties of War" but I'm unaware of other crew members affected. I don't think it's a very strong theory.
His courage and dignity from that point on are astounding.

(12,875 posts)Just sat with my teen granddaughters and watched Back to the Future with them. Theyd never seen it and were blown away.
MJ Fox is such a courageous and generous soul.
This award ceremony was so special.

(4,528 posts)Its insulting. Im not trying to pile on you here, but to rather educate from my own experience. Persons with disabilities (PWD) want to be looked on as every day people, not as some kind of warriors. I have Dystonia, a condition much like Parkinsons. I absolutely cringe whenever a person (especially strangers) comes up to me with a backside compliment
. Oh I admire your strength, its great to see you trying to be in public, etc. Im simply just another person damn it, and want to be treated as such.
I admire MJF for shining a light on Parkinsons. What if hed shown that light, even though he didnt have it, but because a parent, sibling, spouse, child had it, or it was just simply a cause he was interested in? I would have clapped for him to get the MOH just as much. Bono also got his medal not because he suffered from poverty or AIDS in Africa, but because he brought the worlds attention to it.

(88,368 posts)It wasn't meant to be. I will take your slap down.
I have a young brilliant great niece who has a disability and yes, slap me but my heart breaks for her. The reason, I love her dearly. Things will not always be easy for her. Her parents are amazing and her whole family, myself included, stands with her.
I don't find it insulting for a person caring enough about anothers disabilities an insult, but that is just me.
Best~

(4,528 posts)Just by reading your posts here. Maybe I shouldve worded my post a little bit better. All of the isms come from different points of view. Many are malicious, hateful and ugly. Others, come from heartfelt (good) points of view. However, many people dont realize how a broken heart can weigh on the person its directed toward, as much as hatefulness does.
For example when I was younger my disability wasnt so obvious. But I had friends and family who would say shes so beautiful, its too bad
.to me that was as bad as being bullied or called ugly names like crip or being discriminated against when looking for work.
MJF shone a spotlight on Parkinsons and its issues. Whenever I see him I think there goes a life well lived, I dont think, oh how sad. He seems like the kind of good guy, Parkinsons notwithstanding, who could have brought attention to all kinds of issues.
My best to you and yours this New Year!

(4,528 posts)Pitied, heartbroken, etc., nope. People arent just regular everyday people, until theyre treated as such, which is all most of us ask for.
