Story by Billal Rahman
Honduras has threatened to shut down rent-free United States military bases in the country if President-elect Donald Trump carries out his mass deportation policy.
President Xiomara Castro said officials would consider "a change in our policies of cooperation with the United States, especially in the military arena," in the face of "unnecessary reprisals against our migrants."
"Faced with a hostile attitude of mass expulsion of our brothers, we would have to consider a change in our policies of cooperation with the United States, especially in the military arena, where, without paying a cent for decades, they maintain military bases in our territory, which in this case would lose all reason to exist in Honduras."

(83,165 posts)2. Free bases in Honduras is not a good enough reason to not deport people
I'm not advocating for deportations, but the logic of his argument is flawed.
Not sure what he means by "unnecessary reprisals"

It's a Hondurian base that gives the US a space. We primarily use it for weather forecasts, rescues from hurricanes and mudslides and delivering humanitarian aid.
Guatemala said that they will accept citizens of Honduras anyway

(11,611 posts)5. Of course the US has no bases in Honduras
The main U.S. military presence in Honduras is at Soto Cano Air Base outside the capital. While it is a Honduran base, the U.S. has maintained a significant presence there since 1983 and it has become a key U.S. launching point for humanitarian and anti-drug missions in Central America.
