(2,059 posts)But we may have some high profile refugees, and we may need a press in exile, a bit like Air America was for those behind the Iron Curtain. If Trump manages to crack down on liberal media and institute Pravda in America (He's already begun with Truth Social, since Pravda means Truth) I'd rather see Rachel Maddow broadcasting from Canada than withering in jail, or worse.
My family thinks I'm alarmist. Just wait 4 years they say and everything will be alright.
I'm very hopeful for 4 years from now, I just don't think we'll get back the reins of power in a conventional way.

(2,106 posts)We Americans are facing both precedented and unprecedented times. If this were a war, the US lost to the Kremlin thanks to "hybrid warfare" and Quislings like Trumpf and the GOP. The US is not used to losing wars at home.

After 20 Jan 2025, there may be a mass exodus of national security veterans and AUSAs who opposed Trumpf, as well as progressive media luminaries. The majority of the masses who remain in the US will feel like they are being occupied.
Former D/CIA Michael Hayden led the charge of 130 former Republican national security officials denouncing Donald Trumpf in 2020.

(55,955 posts)Compairing what happened to the Dutch as to the U.S. today.
Hyperbole is what the other side does. or so I thought.

(2,106 posts)You didn't find a factual error in my OP and you accuse me of hyperbole.
When I come across an OP that I do not agree with it, I leave it alone. Free speech is part of our heritage. This was simply an opinion piece. If you think living under the Trumpf regime won't feel like an occupation for people of color in the US or for vulnerable migrants, good for you.
BTW: You misspelled "compairing."

P.S. as a Gay man I know what MAGAS are capable of.
BTW: I would rather misspelled one word than have a non factual OP.
Oh, have a nice day.

(38,650 posts)Which foreign nations that you contacted said they would recognize this government in exile?
Which foreign nations that you contacted said they would host this government in exile.
Which of our elected Democrats that you have contacted has said they would be willing to move from the US and form a government in exile?
If the answer is "none" to all three of the questions, then that proves there is no similarity
If you haven't bothered to contact anyone, you could start calling the embassies in Washington starting Monday and you could call the WH too.
I would love to hear the responses you get. Keep us posted!

(17,505 posts)creative enough. Our system is entrenched and calcified.
But we could do what the UK does and have a shadow government, where the Democrats assign one Dem politician for each major member of the new administration, and it is their job to constantly inform the public what their counterpart is doing and to criticize them at every opportunity.
For example, Kamala Harris could be shadow president
Tim Walz could be shadow VP

(34,856 posts)As with most things of consequence, itll only be seen in the rear view mirror. Hey, wheres my Social Security? Arrrgh! That mustve been a coup!
Currently, the Retrumplicans are stealthily replacing the Might makes right card from the right wing Rolodex with a hand written (in musks scrawl, if you must know) Money makes right card in front of the MAGAt rube noses and they dont see it. Why it matters is because none of those MAGAt rubes has any money to speak of, squandering it all on cult bling.

(2,106 posts)"if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil sufficiently gradual, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death." (from wiki).
In essence Americans have been that boiling frog for centuries unknowingly cooking (what Friedrich Engels called "social murder": poor work regulations, social security cuts, no health insurance, military conscription.)
But thanks to Trumpf and these oligarchs we frogs are watching them boldly increase the temperature but we are powerless to jump out of the water.
Another analogy and full disclosure, I was part of the mayhem.
After 9/11, the US invaded two countries and toppled two regimes. Next thing you know, American Soldiers are involved in Iraq and Afghanistan for two decades until Joe Biden finally ended the "forever wars."
We Americans are used to being boiled slowly as citizens or Soldiers, unlike other countries where there is no facade or pretense of good governance and death comes quicker (e.g. USSR/Russia, Iran, Gaza/West Bank, Pol Pot's Cambodia).

(2,106 posts)I can imagine US personnel advising their Ukrainian counterparts in Kiev to be wary of colleagues whom they know are MAGAts (and therefore pro-Kremlin).
When an Austrian spy ring was exposed last year, a British operative was supposedly apprehensive about sharing this information with Vienna, so he approached an Austrian officer that he was sure he could trust and the case worked out well (but damaging to Austria's intelligence agencies).
