The three swearing in parties/receptions were very much "locally" themed. At Rubén Gallego's reception in the Capitol, there were canapés with guacamole and a mariachi band singing Mexican songs. Of course Mark Kelly was there! At Mazie Hirono's party in her Senate office, there were sushi and edamame.
In Elissa Slotkin, Michigan has an upcoming star. Super-smart and well-spoken, and more than ready to hit the ground running. Hers was so big, it wouldn't have fit in the Capitol, or even in a Senate Office Building. It was held, appropriately enough, considering her background, on an upper floor of the International Spy Museum at l'Enfant Plaza. Motown music (of course!) from a hired DJ, and two other women senators from the Midwest---Minnesota's Klobuchar and Smith. Gary Peters, as of today, Michigan's senior senator, spoke as well as the newly retired Debbie Stabenow.
I expect that MSNBC and the Sunday talk shows will be looking to have Elissa Slotkin on frequently. She is smart, sharp and a quick thinker. Almost a combination of Pete Buttigieg and AOC. Michigan did themselves and the Democrats a favor by sending her to the Senate!
There was an ad hoc band of some Democratic Congressmen playing live music, with Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia filling in with a surprisingly good blues harmonica! Some really good vibes in that room.

(93,815 posts)How cool is that? I'd be envious if I wasn't so glad that you were there and like to share your experience!
If I didn't see other invitations, it's just as well.
Long ago, I kept it all quiet, and got either "well, when do we get to hear all about it?" or else skeptics demanding "LINK?!?!?!" as if there were some secret website where I keep a chronicle of whom I meet with every time I'm in DC.
So, now I do it this way, and a few DUers even get to see a few mentions of their very own congresscritters in ways that an impersonal New York Times article can't put across. Many are more fortunate than I, in that given the choice between meeting with one of my Texas Senators or spending two hours in a sewage treatment facility would require some serious contemplation.
I usually keep my elbow rubbing to myself, not that I do that much, but still. It's nice to see that they have genuine pleasure in your company and that matters, picture say a lot.
I have to agree with you on the dicision-making involved in encounters with your own reps, consider that I live in western Montana.
Thanks for sharing, it looks like lemonade is being made of lemons as much as can be, thanks for sharing. Glad you're there and enjoying what there is to enjoy at this point.

(56,953 posts)I never met Tester, but I heard he was a great guy. From I know of his replacement, I think the sewage treatment facility might win out the choice of whom to meet with.

(93,815 posts)The event of choice! At least I'd be wearing protective gear so could avoid most of the ill affects of the sh*t I'd be surrounded by, ya know?
I have to go get horizontal, enjoy your time there!
