WASHINGTON ― President-elect Donald Trump lashed out Friday over plans for the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff during his upcoming inauguration to honor the late President Jimmy Carter ‒ but the White House said it isn't reconsidering the order.
U.S. flags have been flying at half-staff at all federal properties including the Capitol since Dec. 29, when President Joe Biden ordered the measure of respect following Carter's death for 30 days ‒ the prescribed federal timeframe for lowering flags after a president's death since 1954.
Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president on Jan. 20, which falls within the 30-day window.
"The Democrats are all 'giddy' about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at 'half mast' during my Inauguration," Trump said in a post on Truth Social, incorrectly using the term that refers to flags being flown halfway up the mast on a ship at sea, not a flag pole. "They think its so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they dont love our Country, they only think about themselves."

(7,082 posts)I see WAY too many headlines that use these strong, intense, powerful words like "rage", "rant" and "fury" when describing trump's responses to things. Read the post itself:
"The Democrats are all 'giddy' about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at 'half mast' during my Inauguration. They think its so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they dont love our Country, they only think about themselves."
It's weak and whiny, self-pitying, insecure, and petulant.
I am on a rampage against headline writers in 2025. The disconnect between the framing of the headlines and the actual tone of his statements perpetuates a misleading narrative, making him seem far more commanding and resolute than his words reveal.

(7,082 posts)these headlines depict him as strong and powerful, a one man storm to be weathered. But he's really a weak whiny baby. If the headlines said "WHINY MANBABY WHINGES" we would not have to endure this constant barrage of media depicting him as a strong man and a strongman, when he is actually a weak, easily flattered, demented moron.

(915 posts)This is a law, it happened before! The flag was at half-staff for President Truman while the other crook Richard Nixon was sworn in for a second time in 1973, 52 years ago.
But then, Felon 45-47, that dotard is ignorant of history and the law.

(123,950 posts)He'd bring the meaning of the flag at half-staff into the inauguration ceremony. He would point out that flying the flag at half-staff acknowledges the passing of a former president who served his country honorably before, during and after his presidency, and that it symbolizes the country's great respect for that president and his service.
But no. All he can think about is all the photographs and videos of the event with those half-staff flags in the background. He doesn't like the vibe. To him the flags are his and should reflect his victory, not the death of some other president who was never as great as he is.

Historical note:

On the final day of production of Gilligan's Island in Hawaii, the cast and crew learned of John F. Kennedy's assassination. There is a small, subtle reminder of this historical tragedy filmed forever in the opening credits of this comedy series.
