General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI am done with stupid people. Just done.
My New Year's resolution is to avoid stupid people at all costs. If that means that I have to live like a hermit, so be it. I'm not watching cable news. I'm not watching comedy shows that make fun of cable news. I'm not watching Trump nor any other Republican. I'm not watching MAGA podcasts, not following MAGA Twitter, not watching MAGA YouTube videos.
I do BlueSky. I do DU. I watch streaming TV shows, and most importantly, I study. I just want to spend the rest of my life learning, and I want to spend my time with people who value learning and understanding.
Learning makes the stupid go away.

(121,732 posts)It is said that no matter where you are in the world, you are never more than six feet away from a spider. Stupid people are more noticeable (and more pernicious) than spiders, but no matter where you are in the world, there's a stupid person somewhere nearby, either physically or virtually, who's prepared to make your life unpleasant. I'll take spiders, thank you very much.
I gave you a rec for that but dang, I hate spiders! All those legs and hairy spots bug me and I dont know why.

I thought I would pop up and have some small talk and ask how they were all doing this week and there is a new girl up there. The new girl seemed so sweet, friendly enough but out of the blue asked me do I believe in global warming and I was like oh yes of course. I thought maybe being middle age white girl that maybe I looked like the type that believed that maga crap. However she went on to say that she believes this is just natural phase the the earth goes through.
We moved on from that conversation quickly somehow we got on to cars and one of the girls was talking about how she got pulled over for not having insurance or it had lapsed or something. The new girl goes oh good reminder I better go get my car insurance. Basically she's just driving around with out insurance waiting to be arrested. I mean I just don't know what to do with people, I can't deal. This is why I can't do small talk. 🤪
We have all these people going down these rabbit holes of flat Earth and whatever conspiracy theories they think it's real and I don't I just don't know what to do,what a world. 🤦

(23,117 posts)We gave up on network news decades ago and now cable goes in the ash can. They were all wrong and why pay for crap?
Print media? My decades long favorite, The New York Times is dead to me. Same for WaPo and LA Times.
In the past week, I've decided to abandon three friends I've known a long time because of their support for Trump. Because they live in an alternate reality, we have no commonality so there's no point in trying to relate to one another. Simply put, fuck 'em.
We're looking at opportunities in other countries since the re-ascendence of Trump-- and other authoritarians around the world-- signals troubled times ahead. There is an historical example a mere 90 years ago.
The diminishment of public education has dumbed-down several generations of Americans to the point that far too many people lack critical thinking skills. They don't have a civics knowledge of how our governments work. Many were raised in some level privilege by so-called helicopter parents and have developed a laissez-faire perspective of our country. This is one of the profound effects of Republican efforts to mess up public education. The Founding Fathers knew that an educated public was necessary for a functional democracy. After all, if you don't know about your leaders, how can you choose them?
Meanwhile, I've always loved your screen name. Wetyin's Colony might be a swell place to retire to.

(23,117 posts)After I posted above, I realized I'm done with my cousin and her husband. They are the archetypal MAGA stupids and I just cannot look at them in any way without contempt. They will be among the most hurt by Trump and Project 2025 but because of their ignorance, they'll never see it coming. Then they'll blame Democrats because they're idiots.

Upside - They are quick to ban.
Downside - I've seen them ban everyone violating the TOS. Left, right, center. Maybe not a bad thing. Obey the TOS.

I've always thought that stupidity is contagious, and that no one can claim immunity. I may not be an inherently stupid person, but that doesn't mean I'm not stupid sometimes. On the other hand, I have noticed that really, really stupid people think they're really, really smart. Which scares me, a little.
Edited for spelling. See? Stupidity reigns.

(7,937 posts)Nearly all magats qualify: harm to themselves plus harm to others (lose-lose).
Trump nearly qualifies, but he's got just enough self-interest to be also classified as a bandit (win-lose).
This world needs more win-win people, my favorite kind.

The main character explained that his goal of becoming enormously wealthy was so he could build a house and live alone and away from all humans. He said he'd rather be left alone since he had learned to hate people over the years through his life's experiences.

(344 posts)Choosing to not visit a website with content you know you wont like is easy. So is avoiding news that you know will anger or depress you.
What about other people that you know you must interact with in life? How do you determine their intelligence? Do you quiz your doctors receptionist? Or the cashier at your local grocery store? The person processing your property tax payments?
Permanent isolation thats being chosen to avoid stupid people cant be healthy.
I hope you find the comfort you seek.

Like many here, youre refusing to associate with anyone with a different political belief. Certainly your choice. Ive read thread after thread after thread of DUers bragging about disowning family and ending life long friendships over politics.
Whats the strategy to get them to your side in the future? After disowning and ending friendships, youre going to hope they see the error of their vote and come crawling back to your side? I highly doubt that happens.
Before this election, I was posting about VP Harris strategy in PA. The economy here is booming. Not one ad about that. In fact, the opposite. The message was I know the economy is bad, Ill fix it.
The strategy of the Democratic Party and those of you who refuse to associate with anyone who doesnt agree with you is going to work in 26 and 28?
By then, you might be, as you claim, a hermit. With no way to affect the vote of any of the stupid people.
Good luck.
