Hegseth's Testified Against an Obama Nominee, Undermining "Rubber Stamp" Confirmations
Pete Hegseths testimony against the 2010 Supreme Court nomination of Elena Kagan by President Barack Obama demonstrates that he himself did not believe the Senates role is to merely rubber-stamp presidential appointees. Now Hegseth is calling for the Senate to green light Trump's choices.
At the time, Hegseth criticized Kagan for her opposition to the militarys Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy, which barred openly gay and lesbian individuals from serving in the armed forces. Those soldiers could serve under the policy, but had to hide who they were or face possible expulsion.
During his testimony, Hegseth even referred to his drinking, a topic that has increased scrutiny after Fox News colleague told NBC News that Hegseth has a problem drinking at work.
He argued that Kagans decision to restrict military recruiters access to Harvard students in protest of the policy was inappropriate and made her unfit for a seat on the Supreme Court. By testifying against her, Hegseth highlighted the importance of Senate scrutiny and the need to weigh the qualifications and actions of nominees, a principle that should apply equally to Trumps nominees today.
