Suspect arrested in the killing of a woman who was set on fire on a NYC subway car

CNN — A woman was killed on a New York subway train Sunday morning after a man set her clothes on fire with a lighter in what authorities are calling a “brutal murder” and an example of “depraved behavior.”

The suspect was arrested at another subway station in Manhattan about eight hours after the attack, police said.

Police initially believed the victim was sleeping at the time of the attack. While it’s now unclear whether the victim was asleep, she was “motionless” when the attack began, police said Sunday.

The assailant approached the woman without saying a word, ignited her clothes and she was enveloped in flames “in a matter of seconds,” police said. Surveillance video appears to show the suspect sitting on a station bench and watching the woman burn as police officers responded.

“Unbeknownst to the officers who responded, the suspect had stayed on the scene and was seated on a bench on the platform just outside the train car, and the body-worn cameras on the responding officers produced a very clear detailed look at the killer,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. She noted the suspect appeared calm when he initially approached the victim.

Statistically speaking, I'd guess it's at its lowest level in human history given now it's illegal as opposed to government policy in many places.

"A migrant from Guatemala was arrested in connection to the heinous death of a woman who was lit on fire and burned to death on a subway train in Brooklyn, New York, on Sunday.
Sources identified the person as 33-year-old Sebastin Zapeta."

Info is FYI, as I'm sure MSM will run with this.

I know in that case he could have held him without killing him but people don't look at details like that.

They just know there have been attacks including people being killed by people acting crazy and/or being homeless and so they see those cases and defend him.

This is why I saw we need to take strong public positions in these cases to at least prevent the bs put out by the right wing.

In this case they will start saying liberals invited this by being a sanctuary city.

And the fact is most of the people that live in the city and use public transportation or work in retail or other places where they come across different people are dealing with shitty people regularly. Most of these people aren't right wingers.

Otherwise, given that 7 out of 10 people voting in NYC voted for Democrats, it is likely that the majority of anyone doing anything (good or bad) would therefore be much more likely to be Dems.

She should fire whatever tone deaf staffer made this tweet after this incident, on a day with two separate murders on the subway that were in the news hours before it was posted.

There were no eyewitnesses to the attack itself. If not for a camera in a subway car, the suspect would have most likely remained free.

It apparently took a very short time to light her clothes on fire. The suspect didn't do it with a fancy weapon but a simple lighter.

I’m not attacking the Governor, just saying whatever staffer decided to post that hours after two separate violent deaths must not look at the news or is an idiot.

And according to reports it was the officers body cameras that got the clear images of the suspect since he just sat there on a bench while they responded around him, then he just walked away.

if there wasn't a video from inside the subway car showing the attack. Only after they saw that video they realized that the guy sitting on a bench was a suspect.

People and police walking by doing nothing to put out the flames. Is everyone afraid of helping anyone in NYC?
