Ruth Ben-Ghiat on RESISTANCE

'The Aftermath. Fighting Fascism by Building On All That We Achieved During the Campaign

*Of course, in classic strongman fashion, as soon as Trump takes office, he will take credit for the roaring economy, which will be used as proof that he and he alone can “make America great again.” The period of Democratic rule between his presidencies will be depicted as a dark time of hardship and depravity, and his return to power as a heroic journey. .That sets up the new master narrative of the “rebirth” of America, with Trump hailed as an instrument of God’s will by a rotating cast of sycophantic religious charlatans.

This glimpse of a coming American Fascism may be frightening, but being prepared is key to staying resilient and continuing your work in the face of setbacks. Dissidents who endure long authoritarian regimes know all about that.

Resilience seems a good frame to think about this campaign, which failed as an effort to elect Harris but can continue as a pro-democracy movement. As I wrote a few days ago, the campaign has laid the foundation for such a movement, and our organizing, messaging, fund-raising, canvassing, conversing, and strategizing was not in vain.'

Has a nice ring to it.
In the struggle to regain control of the government, both parties encourage voters to join their team.

Reframe the argument.
A movement thats preserve democratic ideals without party identification. It may be possible to prepare disillusioned voters for mid terms.
Already news outlets are running stories on voters who learned how tariffs really work.

Right now, Americans on the liberal side of things look a lot like the 'good' Germans of the 30's.

That may have been accurate if 45% of German Jews voted for Hitler in 1932.

Trump voters:
Women--45% (one Presidential election cycle after Dobbs)
Latinos--45%
Black Men--20% (highest total since 1960 for a Republican)
Muslims-- Stein 51%, Trump 21% Harris 20%.

It wasn't just the misogynists, bigots and racists that elected Trump. It was so many of their victims supported him, also.

Each one of these groups is at substantial risk from a Trump administration and he's been clear about that. I'm not fighting harder for people than they fight for themselves. I may be wrong that Trump is a danger, and they might be correct that Trump's their guy.

I'm a 72 year old white guy with a good pension, a loving wife and no children. I'll sit back for the next 4 years and watch the show. Now, pass the popcorn.

7. I Despair

I likely will Never get over this.

There is no winning now or in the future, because he will destroy all that has been built up for 250 years. It will take decades for our allies to trust us again, if they ever do, and we're an embarrassment around the world, for having put this despicable excuse for a human being back in office.

I have no desire to come back and have our side fix all the damage he will inflict, only to have the MORONS of this country, blame us for not doing a complete enough job, after spending 4 years, as Joe Biden did, getting the country to a good place.

They can have their tin pot dictator, and the fruits of all that goes with him. I do not want to bend over backwards for these people, and will be fine letting them suffer through the wreckage once 2028 arrives.

If Thomas and Alito retire, their replacements will be even worse (though that’s hard to imagine) and much younger. I will be surprised if this SC offers any resistance to anything Trump does that is illegal.

The Republicans have a plan to appoint MAGA judges at every level. All they need is a President and a simple majority in the Senate. When they win, the one or two oldest Supreme Court Justices will retire (Thomas and Alito for now). Then they will appoint new, like-minded justices who are in their early or mid-forties.

Our plan is when fate opens a seat on the SC and we have the Senate, we'll fill it. It's my opinion that there is a better chance that there is a better chance of 8 or 9 MAGA judges before we have a majority on the left.

I keep writing this on many of my posts.

Trump Voters:
45% Women
45% Latinos
20% Black Men (largest share of a vote for a Republican since Nixon in 1960).
Muslims and Arabs did everything they could to hurt Biden and then Harris.

There aren't enough Liberal whites to overcome those votes.

My analogy is this. My neighbor is abused by her husband for 4 years. She leaves him. He wants her back but doesn't even change his abusive behavior. She decides to go back to her Husband, even though I tell it's not a good idea and that she'll be in danger.

There's nothing more I can do.
